Graduate student presentations will headline Brock’s unique Mapping the New Knowledges conference this week.
Fifty-five presenters will give oral and poster presentations from across Brock’s faculties. The conference will feature a variety of topics, including:
- early indicators of childhood obesity
- medicatization issues for women as seen through Oprah magazine
- corporate social responsibility
- social comparisons and body image in exercisers and non-exercisers
- the experiences of the minority female Muslim Shii
The conference is “a very exciting initiative” that brings students together from graduate programs across campus, said Marilyn Rose, Dean of Graduate Studies. The oral sessions and poster displays cross disciplinary boundaries where possible, and students are asked to share their research in plain language clear to those who are not experts, she said.
“Students often express amazement at the ways that their work can be seen to intersect in so many diverse ways with that of others in other programs,” she said. “And those who join us as audience are always impressed with the strength and calibre of graduate research at Brock, and the way that our graduate students contribute so substantially to the research mission of the university.”
The opening plenary will feature Cheryl McCormick, professor and Canada Research Chair in Neuroscience.
This is the third Mapping the New Knowledges event. There were research cafes in November and March.
The event starts with registration and breakfast at 9 a.m. in the Plaza Building 400 mezzanine. It ends at 4 p.m., followed by a Graduate Students’ Association social and awards presentation.
