Ruth C. Peterson and Louis L. Thurstone. "Introductory Statement" in The Effect of Motion Pictures on the Social Attitudes of High School Children. Ann Arbor: Edwards Brothers (1932).
The book remains one of the curiosities of Social Psychology. Guaranteed publication with the rest of the Payne fund studies, Thurstone privately published it a year earlier. Because he recommended this version over the official version, we have annotated differences between the two versions. To suggest they are insignificant would be an overstatement.
Prior publication could be explained in two ways. There were delays in completing the other Payne studies, delays that may have threatened publication. Thurstone may have pursued his own path to insure the work was published. That explanation, however, does not explain why he would cite, this document (only a few copies of which still remain in circulation) and not the official publication.
We suspect that Thurstone wanted his readers to make no association between this work and the other works in the Payne Fund studies.
