More than 3,000 students receive degrees this week

An estimated 3,500 students will receive their degrees and certificates at 2010 Spring Convocation this week. The event takes place over seven ceremonies from Wednesday, June 9, to Saturday, June 12.

All ceremonies will be held in the Ian D. Beddis gymnasium in the Walker Complex at the west end of campus. An outdoor reception for graduates, family members and other special guests will be held after each ceremony. Tickets are not required. All guests are welcome.

Ceremonies will proceed as follows:

Wednesday, June 9, 10 a.m. – Faculty of Education

  • David Hutchison, Teacher Education Department, Faculty of Education, will address Convocation
  • Education Board of Trustees Spirit of Brock medal winner: Jason Dunphy (undergraduate)
  • Education Dean’s Medals: Christina Le Rose and Jennifer Rose Detina

Wednesday, June 9, 2 p.m. – Faculty of Education

  • Ann-Marie DiBiase, Graduate and Undergraduate Studies Department, Faculty of Education, will be presented with the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching
  • John Novak, Graduate and Undergraduate Studies Department, Faculty of Education will address Convocation
  • Education Board of Trustees Spirit of Brock medal winner: Emily Hastings-Speck (graduate)

Thursday, June 10, 10 a.m. – Faculty of Social Sciences

  • The Bailiff of Guernsey, U.K., Sir Geoffrey Rowland will be an Honorary Chair of Senate during the ceremony and will carry the Mace in leading the Chancellor’s procession during Convocation.
  • An honorary degree will be presented to Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond and she will address Convocation
  • Social Sciences Board of Trustees Spirit of Brock medal winner: Renee Louise McKinley (graduate)

Thursday, June 10, 2 p.m. – Faculty of Social Sciences and Concordia Lutheran Seminary

  • An honorary degree will be presented to Wilma Morrison and she will address Convocation
  • Rebecca Raby, Child and Youth Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, will be presented with the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching
  • Social Sciences Board of Trustees Spirit of Brock medal winner: Jessica Horne (undergraduate)
  • Social Sciences Dean’s Medalist: Jennifer Moule

Friday, June 11, 10 a.m. – Faculty of Humanities; Faculty of Mathematics and Science

  • Honorary degrees will be presented to Val Fleming and James Stewart, who will also deliver the convocation address
  • Tamara El-Hoss, Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures, Faculty of Humanities, will be presented with the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching
  • Michael Winter, Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Mathematics and Science, will be presented with the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching
  • Humanities Board of Trustees Spirit of Brock medals winners: Katherine Gottli (undergraduate) and Katherine Schleifer (graduate)
  • Humanities Dean’s Medals: Kathleen Elizabeth Buchan and Caroline Elise Bourque
  • Mathematics and Science Board of Trustees Spirit of Brock medals winners: Jordan MacNeil (undergraduate) and Lisa Neville (graduate)
  • Mathematics and Science Dean’s Medals: Ann Dion and Jonathan Ross
  • Patrick Callaghan Boyle, a PhD student in Biotechnology, will be presented with the Governor General’s Gold Medal, awarded to the student who achieves the highest academic standing at the graduate level

Friday, June 11, 2 p.m. – Faculty of Applied Health Sciences

  • An honorary degree will be presented to Brigadier-General Hilary Jaeger, and she will also address Convocation
  • Brent Faught, Department of Community Health Sciences, Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, will be presented with the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching
  • Applied Health Sciences Board of Trustees Spirit of Brock medals winners: Julie Serroul (undergraduate) and Jennifer Ptasinski (graduate)
  • Applied Health Sciences Dean’s Medals: Bailey Gresham and Matthew Gary Gordon

Saturday, June 12, 10 a.m. – Faculty of Business

  • James MacLellan, 2009 Faculty of Business Distinguished Graduate, and partner in the Construction, Engineering, Surety and Fidelity Group at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, will deliver the Convocation address
  • Professor Donald Cyr, Department of Finance, Operations and Information Systems, Faculty of Business, will be presented with the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching
  • Business Board of Trustees Spirit of Brock medals winners: Vanessa Julie Ralph (undergraduate) and Theodor Soepboer (graduate)
  • Business Dean’s Medalist: Norman Johnston
