Scratch that itch and attend the Burlington wine-tasting event

By Emily Hutton (BA ’09)

If you weren’t able to attend Brock Days Alumni Weekend or you’re itching at the chance to get together again with your friends and fellow alumni in the Stoney Creek, Burlington, Oakville area, well itch no more! On Thursday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m., there will be an alumni wine-tasting event at Appleby College in Oakville. This event will be hosted by two experienced alumni, winemaker Richie Roberts (BSc ’04) of Fielding Estate Winery and Kevin Ker (PhD ’10).

Fielding Estate Winery wine bottlesRoberts was raised in the Niagara area and graduated from Brock’s prestigious Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute (CCOVI), earned multiple awards and scholarships. He’s now the head winemaker at Fielding Estate Winery, using the unique characteristics of the Beamsville Bench terroir to his advantage to create extraordinary vintages.

Kevin Ker (PhD ’10), on the other hand, is a recent Brock alumnus who found local and international success after graduating from the University of Guelph in 1980, speaking at conferences in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and China, just to name a few. Currently, Ker is a research associate for CCOVI as well as a part-time lecturer and professional affiliate.

Together, they’ll teach you about the wine being poured as well as the wine industry, on both a local and international level. Perhaps you’ll find a new favourite wine as the holiday season begins mid-November.

The last Burlington event was an etiquette dinner at the Paletta Mansion, which was a huge success. You won’t want to miss this wine-tasting event where hors d’oeuvres and different types of wines will be served.Tickets are $25 each. Register online.
