Administrative Assistant Mona Lavoie 905-688-5550, extension 4989 Academic South 455 fahs.brocku.ca/spma The Department of Sport Management offers a four-year program leading to a Bachelor of Sport Management (BSM). The requirement for graduation with a BSM (Honours) is a minimum 70 percent major average and a minimum 60 percent non-major average. The requirement for graduation with a BSM is a minimum 60 percent major average and a minimum 60 percent overall average. The program is designed to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding sport industry and incorporates experiential opportunities for students. Students will be prepared for sport management career opportunities that include marketing, public relations, promotions, communications, human resources and financial, facility and event management in a variety of public, commercial and non-profit organizations. It is the responsibility of Sport Management students to adhere to the Department of Sport Management's Ethical and Professional Code of Conduct which is in conjunction with Brock University's Code of Student Conduct.  
Re-admission and Transfer Eligibility Go to top of document
The application form for re-admission or for transfer into the BSM program (Declare or Change Majors) is available on the web at brocku.ca/webfm_send/1400 or at the Registrar's Office. The Declare or Change Majors form to transfer into the BSM must be completed and returned to the Office of the Registrar by May 1. The BSM is a limited enrolment program. Admission is not guaranteed by attainment of the minimum requirements outlined below. To be eligible for re-admission, or for transfer from another program, to the BSM program, a student must meet all of the following requirements: One of MATH 1F92, 1P20, one 4U MATH. Completion of SPMA 1P91 and 1P92 with a minimum 60 percent in each. A minimum 60 percent average overall in all SPMA major courses taken to date which would be included in the calculation of the BSM major average. Completion of two context credits. A minimum 60 percent overall average.

1.  A minimum 60 percent in each of SPMA 1P91, 1P92 and 1P94, a minimum 60 percent major average, and a minimum 60 percent overall average are required to continue as a major in Sport Management.  
2.  All students must take 3 context credits: one Humanities context credit, one Sciences context credit and one Social Sciences context credit. Two credits must be used to satisfy context requirements by the end of year 2 and the third context credit must be completed no later than the end of year 3.  
3.  Students may choose to take ENTR 2P51 in year 3. If students choose this option, then an additional one-half elective credit must be taken in year 2.  
4.  SPMA majors must take a minimum of two non-SPMA elective credits (excluding cross-listed and context courses).

In 20 credit degree programs a maximum of eight credits may be numbered 1(alpha)00 to 1(alpha)99; at least three credits must be numbered 2(alpha)90 or above; at least three credits must be numbered 3(alpha)90 or above; and the remaining credits must be numbered 2(alpha)00 or above.

In some circumstances, in order to meet university degree and program requirements, more than 20 credits may be taken.

SPMA 1P91 Introduction to Sport Management Micro aspects of management applied to sport, including human resources, sport marketing, sponsorship, finance, event management, sport law, and related issues. SPMA 1P92 Understanding Sport Industry Sectors Macro aspects of the sport industry, including key actors, governance, funding, current research and industry trends in public, commercial, and non-profit sectors. Lectures, seminar, 3 hours per week. Restriction: open to SPMA majors until date specified in Registration guide. Note: an experiential component may be included. SPMA 1P94 Professional Engagement for the Sport Industry Introduction to communication competence and professionalism within the sport workplace. Lectures, seminar, 3 hours per week. SPMA 1P97 Research Design and Evaluation Issues concerning the construction, administration and evaluation of data collection as well as the processing and analysis of data. SPMA 2P08 Facility Management Sport facility theory and operation emphasizing planning, assessment, and feasibility functions in commercial and public facilities. Lectures, 3 hours per week. Topics may include individual (motivation, job satisfaction) and interpersonal (communication, group dynamics) processes and management functions concerning employees in sport organizations. SPMA 2P65 Sport Marketing Introduction to marketing concepts and strategies utilized in the sport industry. Topics include the marketing planning process, market research and segmentation, the components of the marketing mix, and promotional and pricing concepts. Lectures, 3 hours per week. Topics may include the history of labour organizing and labour relations in professional sports, collective bargaining, strikes, and lockouts, and how axes of inequality, including race, gender, and sexuality, shape athletes' experiences of work. SPMA 2P91 Public Relations and Communications for Sport Management Introduction to community relations and content development for internal/external communication, emphasizing electronic, digital and social media. SPMA 2P92 Data Management and Technology for Sport Management Principles of big data management and database systems for managing sport information. Prerequisite(s): SPMA 1P97. #SPMA 2P95 Masculinities: A Feminist Perspective (also offered as CHYS 2P95 and WGST 2P95) Masculinities and the relation between multiple dimensions of social relations and inequalities across the lifespan: gender, race/ethnicity, class and sexual orientation. How masculinities are produced in varied sport, social, historical and cultural sites. Lectures, seminar, 3 hours per week. Restriction: students must have a minimum of 4.0 overall credits. SPMA 2P96 Introduction to Sport and the Law Sport-related legal issues and concepts. Topics may include negligence and liability, risk management, violence, discrimination, doping, employment and labour law, principles of procedural fairness. Lectures, 3 hours per week. SPMA 2P98 Sport Event Management Examination of traditional and niche events in sport at local, provincial, national and international levels. Topics include phases in the planning model, concept of facilitation, contingency planning, environmental sustainability, bid process and the politics of events. Lectures, seminar, 3 hours per week. SPMA 3P05 Management Concepts in Non-profit Sport Organizations Principles and practices of management in the non-profit sport sector. SPMA 3P07 Quantitative Analysis for Sport Management Principles and practices of planning, designing, collecting, analyzing and interpreting statistical data. SPMA 3P17 Qualitative Analysis for Sport Management Examination of assumptions, ethical concerns, and trustworthiness as it applies to the collection and analysis of qualitative data. SPMA 3P21 Managing Human Resources in Sport Organizations Theories, research and current practices emphasizing the fundamentals of managing sport employees. SPMA 3P25 Sport Sponsorship Management and delivery of the sport sponsorship marketing exchange process. EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING COURSES

SPMA 3P02 Sport Management Field Work Placement in an internal Brock University sport or sport-related organization. Topics surrounding preparation for professional engagement in the sport industry. Tutorial, 2 hours alternating weeks; 80 hours field work. Restriction: open to SPMA majors with a minimum of 8.0 overall credits. Prerequisite(s): SPMA 2P06 and 2P98 (2P05). Note: enrolment limited. Placements will be secured by instructor. Students may not concurrently register in SPMA 4P92. Depending on the nature of the placement, a Police record check with a vulnerable sector screening may be required. Students are not guaranteed the opportunity to repeat SPMA experiential courses. SPMA 4P92 Sport Management Practicum Field placement with sport-related groups and organizations. Restriction: open to SPMA majors with a minimum of 13.0 overall credits and permission of the instructor. Note: enrolment limited. Placement will be a part-time 80 hour experience during the term. Students are responsible for obtaining the placement in consultation with the instructor. Depending upon the nature of the placement, a Police record check with a vulnerable sector screening may be required. Transportation to placement is student's responsibility. Completion of this course will replace previous assigned grade and credit obtained in SPMA 4F02. SPMA 4P93 Sport for Development Field Experience May include planning, communication, relationship building, leadership development, program delivery and evaluation in a national or international humanitarian sport project. Lectures, lab, fieldwork. Restriction: open to SPMA majors with a minimum of 13.0 overall credits and permission of the instructor. Prerequisite(s): SPMA 3P93. Note: enrolment limited. Students must complete an application and interview prior to being admitted into the course. Students must be at least 18 years of age, have a valid passport, visa and immunizations as required. Students are required to pay their own expenses. Students are not guaranteed the opportunity to repeat SPMA experiential courses. Depending upon the nature of the placement, a Police record check with a vulnerable sector screening may be required. SPMA 4P98 Major Games Field Course Observation and analysis of operations of a major sport event. Topics may include marketing, human resources, sponsorship, finance, venue management and strategic alliances. Lectures, lab, fieldwork. Restriction: open to SPMA majors with a minimum of 13.0 overall credits and permission of the instructor Prerequisite(s): SPMA 2P98 (3P08). Note: enrolment limited. Students must complete an application and interview prior to being admitted into the course and attend an orientation session. Students must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid passport, visa and immunizations as required. Students are required to pay their own expenses. SPMA 4F01 Sport Management Internship Project Analysis of individual internship experience (SPMA 4F02) relative to the application of selected sport management theories, concepts and practices. Project focus and format will be developed in consultation with the course instructor and student. Restriction: open to SPMA majors with a minimum 70 percent major average, a minimum of 13.0 overall credits and permission of the instructor. Corequisite(s): SPMA 4F02. Note: enrolment limited. Students may not concurrently register in SPMA 4F03, 4F04 or 4F05. Students are not guaranteed the opportunity to repeat SPMA experiential courses. SPMA 0N40 Experiential Preparation Provides students with specialized knowledge, practices, culture and skills as required by host organization in preparation for a particular credit-based experience. Lectures, presentations, workshops, site visits as required. Restriction: open to SPMA majors with a minimum of 13.0 credits and permission of the instructor. Note: may be offered online. To be run as appropriate to the needs/demands of particular experiential host organizations; not all experiential credit courses may require this course to be taken. Students are required to pay their own expenses.
