Fellowships, Scholarships, Bursaries, Awards and Financial Assistance

 

Various forms of financial support are available to graduate students. In addition to the scholarships and awards listed below, Brock awards fellowships, bursaries and teaching assistantships to incoming and full-time returning students on the basis of academic merit. Students' admission letters are accompanied by a Student Financial Funding Information Form that outlines, where appropriate, their particular graduate funding package. Students are encouraged to check the Graduate Studies website: (http://www.brocku.ca/gradstudies/financial/scholarshipsawards.php) for scholarship and award competition dates and applications. Graduate students are encouraged to apply for any of the awards and scholarships for which they are eligible. To be eligible to apply for internal and external awards, scholarships and bursaries, graduate students must be registered as a full-time student. A student who is withdrawn from the university or has a change of status will have their scholarship eligibility reviewed and possibly withdrawn.

Brock University Internal Scholarships and Awards Coordinated by the Office of Graduate Studies

G. Ronald Brown Graduate Award

Value: to be determined

An annual award to a full-time student in good standing, in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science who has demonstrated financial need. Applicants must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships, available from the Graduate Studies website: http://www.brocku.ca/gradstudies/forms/. This award was established in 2002 in memory of Dean Ron Brown.

Canadian Tire Financial Services MBA Award

Value: $7,500/year (for 2 years of the program)

An annual award for each of the two years of the program, provided the full-time Business student maintains an 80% overall average. The recipient will be selected on the basis of academic performance and demonstrate financial need. The student must exhibit extraordinary leadership characteristics and demonstrates the potential to build on the Brock MBA experience to make a difference in our communities. Preference given to a student from the Niagara, Hamilton or Burlington area. Distinguished Graduating Student Award

Value: $100

Awarded to the most distinguished graduate for each graduate program. The award and a certificate will be awarded at Spring convocation.

Excellence in Research Award

Value: $1,500

An annual award to three graduate students who have displayed excellence in research. The recipient may be full-time, part-time, domestic or international. Each graduate program may nominate one student for each relevant award category. The award will be made by the Senate Graduate Studies Awards Sub-Committee, following the review and adjudication of the nominations. The successful recipients will receive acknowledgment at the Spring convocation.

John Edds Prize in Master of Accountancy

Value: $400.00

An annual award to a student who has demonstrated academic excellence in the Master of Accountancy program. The candidate will be selected by the Faculty of Business. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships, available from the Graduate Studies website: http://www.brocku.ca/gradstudies/forms/.

Faculty of Education Fellowships

Value: $1,500

A maximum of three graduate fellowships are awarded each year to new and continuing full-time students in the Master of Education program who have achieved high academic standing. Prospective candidates for fellowships will be considered on application for admission to the Master of Education program. Continuing students will be considered after successful completion of their first year of study. In order to qualify, students must be registered as full-time students.

Faculty of Education Graduate Bursary

Value: $1,000

A number of graduate bursaries are awarded each year to continuing full-time students in the Master of Education program who are experiencing financial difficulties. Only one such bursary can be obtained during the student's MEd program. Application details and deadlines can be obtained from the Faculty of Education. Applicants must provide evidence of on-going participation in the program, a statement outlining financial need, and a reference letter from a full-time faculty member describing the student's academic progress.

Gordon R. Finlay Scholarship

An annual award to an outstanding graduate student in Chemistry who has an excellent record in research, course work and demonstrating. Preference will be given to international students. David Goicoechea Award

Value: to be determined

An annual award to a student who has graduated from the Brock undergraduate degree program in Philosophy and is entering into the Brock Master's program in Philosophy. The recipient must meet OSAP residency requirements and demonstrate financial need. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships, available from the Graduate Studies website: http://www.brocku.ca/gradstudies/forms/.

Governor General's Gold Medal

The Governor General's Gold Medal is awarded at Spring convocation to a graduate student who achieves the highest academic standing in a graduate degree program. Graduands from both the Spring and the previous Fall convocation are eligible. The medal will be awarded on the recommendation of the Senate Graduate Studies Awards Sub-Committee.

Harrison-Thompson Bursary Trust

Value: $5,000 (one award for each listed faculty)

An annual award for one full-time student in each of the five faculties, Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, Business, Humanities, Mathematics and Science, Social Sciences. The award is renewable based on academic excellence and the recipient must demonstrate financial need. The recipient must meet OSAP residency requirements. The student must complete the Harrison-Thompson Bursary Trust Application Form, available from the Graduate Studies website: http://www.brocku.ca/gradstudies/forms/.

W. D. Hatch Memorial Scholarship

An annual award to an outstanding student during the first or second year of a graduate program. The candidate must have a first-class academic standing whose thesis research is concerned with, in the first instance, in the field of viticulture or oenology or, secondly, with the application of Biotechnology relating to agriculture. The recipient must demonstrate financial need and meet OSAP residency requirements. Richard L. Hearn Scholarship

An annual award to a full-time graduate student in the first or subsequent year of a graduate degree in Physics who has achieved high academic standing. Established in 1989 in memory of Dr. Richard L. Hearn, Brock University's first Chancellor.

Dante F. Marinelli/Niagara Duty Free Shops Scholarship

An award made annually to either an undergraduate or a graduate student who is enrolled in a program in the Faculty of Business and who is a resident of the Niagara peninsula. The applicant must demonstrate financial need and meet OSAP residency requirements and complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships, available from the Graduate Studies website: http://www.brocku.ca/gradstudies/forms/. The recipient will continue to receive the award annually throughout his/her Brock career, contingent on maintaining a minimum 75% average.

Ralph D. Morris Graduate Student Award

Value: to be determined

An annual award to a student in the first or second year of graduate studies at Brock who has been involved in university activities which reflect well on graduate students or extra-curricular activities that enhance the Brock University's role in the community. The successful candidate will be selected on the strength of responses to areas that reflect these qualities. The award will be awarded on the recommendation of the Senate Graduate Studies Awards Sub-Committee.

Wendy Murphy Memorial Award

Value: $1500

The award will be made annually to a returning Psychology graduate student based on consistent academic excellence and collegiality. The candidate will be nominated by a selection committee appointed by the Psychology Department.

Niagara District Chartered Accountants Association Award in Master of Accountancy

Value: $1000

Awarded to a student entering the Master of Accountancy (MAcc) program with the highest entering average and demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to students from the Niagara Region. The student will be nominated by the department/program. Applicants must meet OSAP residency requirements and complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships, available from the Graduate Studies website: http://www.brocku.ca/gradstudies/forms/.

Jack Noble Book Prize

Value: Cerificate from the Brock University Bookstore

The book prize is awarded to a Master of Education student at Spring and Fall Convocations, who has achieved the highest academic standing in the program. The prize is awarded in the name of Jack Noble on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Oded Bar-Or Graduate Travel Award in Pediatric Exercise Medicine

Value: to be determined

An annual award to a student in the graduate program of the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, with financial need and high academic standing. An international student working in the area of Pediatric Exercise Medicine may be considered. This award is primarily used to help offset the travel costs incurred in the presentation of their research in the field of Pediatric Exercise Medicine at a national or international scientific conference. Ontario Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology

The scholarship will be awarded to Canadian citizens or permanent residents enrolled in approved research master's and or doctoral programs in science and technology at an Ontario University. Recipients must exhibit overall academic excellence. The student must complete the OGSST Nomination Form, available from the Graduate Studies website: http://www.brocku.ca/gradstudies/forms/.

Edgar and Irmgard Penner Scholarship

Awarded annually to an international student in any field, in the first or subsequent year of a graduate program, who has achieved high academic standing and does not receive financial support from his/her country. President's Surgite Award

Value: to be determined, plus a Certificate of Recognition

The award is intended to recognize those students who have been outstanding in one or more of the following areas: the applicant must demonstrate exemplary leadership in a student club, organization, association or team; they must have done something exceptional that helped to advance Brock's academic reputation; they may have made a significant contribution to student life at Brock and/or provided a valuable service to Brock or the broader community. The application forms for this award are available from the Student Awards & Financial Aid Office (ST 402) http://www.brocku.ca/safa. Fall Award application forms are accepted from September 1-October 15 and the Winter Award application forms are accepted from January 1-February 15. Applicants are selected by the Senate Committee on Awards and Bursaries.

Vern and Donna Sutherland Memorial Bursary

An annual award to an undergraduate or graduate student in financial need without regard to the year of study. You may apply for this bursary from August 1 through to October 15.

Dr. G.M.C. Sprung Memorial Award

Thompson-Harrison Graduate Scholarship

Value: to be determined

An annual award to an international student studying physics at the graduate level who has achieved a high academic standing in-course and whose studies are not fully funded by his/her government. Should no physics international graduate student qualify, the scholarship will be awarded to a top chemistry graduate student, qualifying under the same conditions. In the event that no international student qualifies, the scholarship will be awarded, in the first instance, to a physics student who has attained a high academic standing on entry or in-course. Should no physics student qualify, the scholarship will be awarded to a chemistry student, qualifying under the same conditions. External Scholarships and Awards Coordinated by the Office of Graduate Studies at Brock University

Autism Scholars Award

With the support of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, a Scholar Awards Program in Autism has been established to ensure that Ontario attracts and retains pre-eminent scholars. The community of autism scholars fostered by this Awards Program will excel, according to internationally accepted standards of scientific excellence, in the creation of new knowledge concerning child autism, and its translation into improved health for children, more effective services and products for children with autism, and increase the province's capacity in diagnosis and assessment of autism and a strengthened treatment system.

For 2007-08, up to two awards at the Master's level and up to two awards at the Doctoral level will be made:

Master's Awards - $17,000

Doctoral Awards - $19,000

Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario Research Master's Studentship Awards

Value: $18,000 per annum for 2 years

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario is continuing to offer a limited number of Master's Studentship awards to highly qualified candidates who have completed or are in the last year of a Baccalaureate degree. Candidates will undertake full-time training in cardiovascular/cerebrovascular research under an identified academic supervisor. Please note that graduates possessing a medical degree must apply to the national HSF Fellowship program. Candidates must not hold another major award concurrently. The awardee may not have held a prior faculty appointment. The Master's studentships are tenable at Ontario universities to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada studying in Ontario who have achieved a minimum of 80% on course work completed in the last two years of study. Applicants may already be enrolled in a Master's program. The duration of the award will then be adjusted to accurately reflect the remaining period of study. Awards will take effect only after the recipient has registered full-time in an eligible (i.e., relevant to cardiovascular/cerebrovascular research) Master's program. Mackenzie King Scholarships Awards

The Mackenzie King Open Scholarship is open to graduates of any Canadian university who engage in (commence or continue) postgraduate study in any field, in Canada or elsewhere. It's value has been $9,000 but is subject to change. The Mackenzie King Travelling Scholarship is open to graduates of any Canadian university who engage in (commence or continue) postgraduate study, in the United States or the United Kingdom, of international relations or industrial relations (including the international or industrial relations aspects of law, history, politics and economics). Four Travelling Scholarships of $10,000 have lately been awarded annually, but the number and value of the scholarships are subject to change. The awards will be based on high academic achievements (all A's or very nearly so), personal qualities and demonstrated aptitudes. Consideration will also be given to the applicant's proposed program of study.

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)

NSERC is a national funding organization that invests in Canada's capability in science and technology in the natural sciences and in engineering. NSERC offers Postgraduate Scholarships (PGS) which provide financial support to high-calibre scholars who are engaged in Master's or Doctoral programs in the natural sciences or engineering. This support allows these scholars to fully concentrate on their studies and to seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields. PGS Master's awards are valued at $17,300 (for one year) PGS Doctoral awards are valued at $21,000 (for up to 3 years) The Government of Canada has recently offered the prestigious Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) program. The scholarships are awarded through national competitions held by each of the three federal granting agencies to allow a greater number of excellent students to pursue graduate studies in Canada. Thirty percent of the award recipients are students in the natural sciences and engineering. The CGS program assists in ensuring a reliable supply of highly qualified personnel to meet the needs of Canada's knowledge economy. CGS Master's awards are valued at $17,500 (for one year) CGS Doctoral awards are valued at $35,000 (for up to 3 years). Industrial Postgraduate Scholarships (IPS) provide financial support for highly qualified science and engineering graduates. The support allows them to gain research experience in industry while undertaking advanced studies in Canada. These scholarships are aimed at encouraging scholars to consider research careers in industry where they will be able to contribute to strengthening Canadian innovation. NSERC IPS: $15,000/year for up to two years plus company contribution of $6,000 minimum a year. Social Sciences of Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) is an arm's-length federal agency that promotes and supports university-based research and training in the social sciences and humanities. SSHRC offers Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) which provide financial support to the most outstanding eligible scholars pursuing master's or doctoral studies in a Canadian university. The Government of Canada established these prestigious scholarships, to be awarded through national competitions by the granting agencies, to ensure a reliable supply of highly qualified personnel to meet the needs of Canada's knowledge economy. Canada Graduate Scholars will help renew faculty at Canadian universities and will be the research leaders of tomorrow.

If you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, have completed or are about to complete a bachelor's degree, or are already pursuing a master's degree in the humanities or social sciences, you may be eligible to apply for a master's scholarship.

Graduate Scholarships Program Master's Scholarships

Value: $17,500 per annum

If you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada and have completed a bachelor's degree, you may be eligible to apply for a Master's Scholarship.

Canada Graduate Scholarships Program Doctoral Awards

If you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, have completed or are about to complete a master's degree or a bachelor's degree in the humanities or social sciences, or are already pursuing a PhD or equivalent or a combined MA/PhD, you may be eligible to apply for a doctoral award.

CGS Doctoral Scholarships: $35,000 per annum for 3 years

SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships: $20,000 per annum for 12, 24, 36 or 48 months

If you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, have completed or are about to complete a master's degree in the humanities or social sciences or are already pursuing a PhD or equivalent, you may be eligible to apply for a Doctoral Fellowship. CIHR Canada Graduate Scholarships Master's Awards

Value: $17,500 per year

The Canada Graduate Scholarships Master's Awards administered by CIHR are intended to provide special recognition and support to students who are pursuing a Master's degree in a health related field in Canada. These candidates are expected to have an exceptionally high potential for future research achievement and productivity.

Ontario Graduate Scholarships

Value: $5,000 per academic term for three terms

The Province of Ontario offers scholarships (in conjunction with Brock University) to students in or entering graduate programs. The Scholarships are tenable at the Ontario University of the student's choice. The awards are tenable in all disciplines and the applicant must have high academic achievement and meet certain citizenship requirements. Ontario Women's Health Scholars Award

With the support of the Ontario Women's Health Council, and funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, a Scholar Awards Program in Women's Health has been established to ensure that Ontario attracts and retains pre-eminent women's health scholars. The community of women's health scholars fostered by this Awards program will excel, according to internationally accepted standards of scientific excellence, in the creation of new knowledge about women's health and its translation into improved health for women, more effective health services and products for women, and a strengthened health care system.

For 2007-08, up to two awards will be made at each of the Master's and Doctoral levels, and one award at the Postdoctoral level:

Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarship Awards

Value: $35,000 per annum for 3 years

All students who are a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant pursuing full-time doctoral studies in Canada and exceptionally to Canadians who are pursuing full-time doctoral studies at a foreign institution. To be eligible for consideration by the Foundation, candidates must be applying into the first year of a doctoral program, or must be registered in the first or second year of such a program. Candidates must be enrolled in or must have completed a degree program at the nominating institution, or must be enrolled in or applying to a doctoral program there.
