A background in linguistics is essential for language teachers, translators, speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and many other language professionals. The Department of Applied Language Studies offers programs of study leading to an Honours degree with specializations in Pre-Professional Speech-Language Pathology, Pre-Professional Audiology, Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language (TESL), or Applied Linguistics. Students may also elect a four-year program of study leading to a BA with a Major in Applied Language Studies, with specialization in Pre-Professional Speech-Language Pathology. Pass BA degrees in Applied Language Studies are also available, with specialization in Pre-Professional Speech-Language Pathology or Applied Linguistics. The four-year degree programs (Honours, BA with a Major) give students the opportunity to prepare for employment (e.g., TESL) or for admission to post-baccalaureate training in a variety of fields. Students who intend to pursue a BEd degree or graduate study specifically in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology should complete the Honours program. The Department also offers a Communicative Disorders Assistants Certificate, a Pre-Professional Certificate in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology and a Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language/Foreign Language. Courses concerning the structure of American Sign Language and English as a Second Language/Subsequent Language are also offered. English As A Second Language courses (APLS) are designed to enhance and develop the English speaking and writing ability of students whose native language is not English. Students with scores below TOEFL 580, TOEFL CBT 237, MELAB 90, IELTS 7.0 who have been accepted into academic programs are required to register in APLS 1P90 and APLS 1P91 in Year 1 along with no more than four credits. The Department offers four streams, allowing students to specialize in Pre-Professional Speech-Language Pathology, Pre-Professional Audiology, Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language, or Applied Linguistics. Students must choose one of the four streams by the end of Year 1. Pre-Professional Speech-Language Pathology Stream This stream provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to learn about basic communication processes, including the anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing, acoustics, linguistics, and child language development, and about selected disorders of human communication. Honours students have the opportunity to prepare for admission to graduate study in speech-language pathology. The minimum qualification to practise speech-language pathology in Canada and the United States is a Master's degree. Students in the four-year BA with a Major and Pass BA programs have the opportunity to prepare for admission to post-baccalaureate training as Communicative Disorders Assistants. Pre-Professional Audiology Stream This stream provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to learn about basic sciences (e.g., biology, physics), basic communication processes, including the anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing, acoustics, linguistics, and child language development, and about selected disorders of human communication. Honours students have the opportunity to prepare for admission to clinical doctorate (AuD) programs in audiology. The minimum qualification to practice audiology in Canada and the United States is currently a Master's degree. Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language (TESL) Stream (Honours only) This stream is offered as a four-year Honours program and provides background in theories and methodologies relevant to the learning and teaching of English as a second or foreign language. Students interested in teaching language in the Ontario school system should consult the Ministry of Education and Training guidelines. In those guidelines, "Language Courses" mean English or any teachable (modern language) subject. Applied Linguistics Stream This stream offers students the opportunity to learn about the analysis of language. Along with an introductory course in linguistics (LING 1F94), the Department offers foundation courses focusing on the sounds of language (phonetics and phonology), relationships among words in language (syntax), mutual influence between culture (and other group membership) and language (sociolinguistics), and ways in which language is used in context (pragmatics and discourse analysis) and is acquired. Students who wish to major in Applied Language Studies (in any area of specialization) must apply to declare their major. Declaration of Major forms are available from the Office of the Registrar and on-line at http://www.brocku.ca/registrar/forms/index.html. Students in three- and four-year degree programs normally register for courses according to the program of study effective at the time they first declared their major. The faculty of the Department of Applied Language Studies believes that students benefit from a broadly based liberal arts background in conjunction with a major in Applied Language Studies. Honours students are therefore encouraged to acquire some background in other academic disciplines as part of their undergraduate education. Students who wish to pursue a four-year degree (Honours and BA with a Major) must apply to be admitted to Year 4 after completing 15 credits. The requirements for graduation with a BA (Honours) are a minimum 70 percent major average and a minimum 60 percent non-major average. Communicative Disorders Assistants Certificate Communicative Disorders Assistants (also called Communication Disorders Assistants, Speech-Language Pathology Assistants, or Audiology Assistants) are supportive personnel who work under the supervision of Speech-Language Pathologists or Audiologists. Their duties typically include preparing therapy materials for adults and/or children who have communication and/or swallowing disorders, conducting individual and/or group therapy sessions, reporting on therapy outcomes, and carrying out routine maintenance on clinical equipment. Communicative Disorders Assistants (CDAs) are employed in the same settings as Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists, including hospitals, school boards, specialized rehabilitation centres, and private practice. The program is designed to inform students about therapeutic principles and approaches that are applicable to a variety of communication disorders, and to prepare them for employment as CDAs. This program has been designed to reflect descriptions of suportive personnel from the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO) and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Students may apply to the program after completing the Pre-Professional Speech-Language Pathology stream degree, Audiology stream degree or equivalent with an minimum overall average of 60 percent. Enrolment is limited. Applicants must submit a resume, official transcript(s), a letter of intent, and two letters of reference. Prospective students should contact the Department for additional information. Field placements are an integral component of this certificate program; students must successfully complete both placements (held after the completion of all credit courses) to graduate. Introduction to Language and Communication Disorders Various contemporary theories of normal and abnormal language acquisition and learning. Topics include neurological, psychological, cultural and pathological factors. Attention to the development of strong academic reading and writing abilities. Lectures, seminar, 3 hours per week. Note: this course is of interest to students in education, behavioural and social sciences, to health professionals and to students intending to pursue subsequent professional training in speech-language pathology or audiology. Introduction to General Linguistics Phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics; their evidence in language use; classification of human languages; language and society. Note: this course is relevant to students interested in the structure and meaning of English and other languages, and particularly to those contemplating careers in language teaching, literary studies, translation, computational linguistics, speech-language pathology, and audiology. American Sign Language I Basic signing vocabulary and grammar, including a brief history of sign language. Focus on basic finger spelling, ASL terminology, expressive and receptive vocabulary, sentence structure, and conversational signs. Examination of issues in deaf culture. American Sign Language II Advanced structures, including the manual alphabet, finger spelling, and American Sign Language vocabulary and grammar. Anatomy and Physiology of Speech Production Structural and functional bases of respiration, phonation and articulation for the production of speech and voice. Acoustic and Physiological Phonetics Acoustic, physiological and perceptual characteristics of speech. Comparative Romance Linguistics (also offered as MLLC 2P94) Romance languages; their structures, related concepts, differences and mutual influences. Lectures, seminar, 3 hours per week. The use of transcription skill in the analysis and description of the speech sound of second language speakers, young children and phonologically impaired speakers of first and subsequent languages. Discourse Analysis Textual and contextual analysis of discourse in terms of language variation, cohesion and coherence, topicality, and schematic knowledge. Topics include psychological aspects of language learning (behaviourism, cognitivism, humanism), language and culture, contrastive analysis, error analysis, interlanguage. Lectures, seminar, 3 hours per week. Language Disorders in Adults Introduction to neurolinguistics and human neuroanatomy. Theories and models of brain-language relationships and approaches to assessment and intervention for aphasia and related adult-onset neurogenic disorders of language processing and production. Evaluation of Speech and Language Disorders Principles and procedures of clinical evaluation in speech-language pathology from initial referral to report writing. Topics include clinical interviewing, psychometric properties of norm-referenced tests, instrumental and other forms of measurement and ethical and cultural considerations for assessing speech, voice and language disorders across the lifespan. Speech and Swallowing Disorders in Adults Current therapeutic approaches to common speech disorders of adults, especially older adults, including speech motor control disorders, voice disorders (especially laryngectomy), and fluency disorders. Focus on critical analysis and evaluation of psychometric and pragmatic tests through item analysis and/or latent trait measurement. Lectures, seminar, 3 hours per week. Bilingualism Linguistic and psycholinguistic aspects of bilingualism: models of bilingual education, linguistic abilities in bilinguals, constraints on mixing and code-switching, the organization of the bilingual lexicon, language processing in bilinguals, language attrition. Topics in Sociolinguistics Critical examination and application of current sociolinguistic theories in Canadian and international contexts. Topics include the analysis of language in relation to ideology, ethnicity, class, gender and power in institutional and other social settings. Seminar, 3 hours per week. Topics in Applied Linguistics Critical examination and application of current linguistic theories. Topics include the analysis of language in relation to communication disorders, first and second language acquisition, language teaching, storytelling, innateness and other linguistic domains. Seminar, 3 hours per week. Prerequisites: LING 2P53 and 2P61. Completion of this course will replace previous assigned grade in LING (CHYS) 4P60. Supervised Teaching Class observation, including planning, managing and delivering second language instruction. Seminar discussions on current conceptual knowledge (theoretical) and perceptual knowledge (practical) highlighted with reference to the second language teaching and learning context. Listening and Speaking in a Second Language Theories of and issues in the development of oral language processing in a second or subsequent language. Canadian Language Benchmarks. Field Placement I First field placement (minimum of 210 hours) under the supervision of a practising speech-language pathologist or audiologist. Orientation to the roles and responsibilities of Speech-Language Pathologists, Audiologists, and Communicative Disorders Assistants, and to field placements, including setting learning objectives, evaluating behavioural competency reports, resume preparation, and interview skills preparation. Lectures, presentations, 3 hours per week; site visits. Restriction: permission of the Department. Note: some field placement sites may require students to commute to/from their place of residence, or may require them to relocate (within Ontario). Transportation to and from, or relocation near, clinical sites is a student responsibility. Proof of vaccination may be required. Field Placement II Second field placement (minimum of 280 hours) under the supervision of a practising speech-language pathologist or audiologist. Restriction: permission of the Department. Prerequisite: LING 0N01. Note: this clinical site must be different from the one provided for LING 0N01. Some field placement sites may require students to commute to/from their place of residence, or may require them to relocate (within Ontario).
