Today our travelers must get to and from Whistler. They did not
anticipate buying the hockey jersey the previous day, so while eating
the complementary breakfast at the hotel, Kenji and Yumi agree to
try to save money on their transportation to and from Whistler.
Complete the following problem to determine Kenji and Yumi’s method
of transportation today.
Kenji: We are finally here.
In 1900, Alta Lake was the original name given to Whistler. Trappers
and prospectors settled in the area calling the region “Whistler”
because of the shrill whistle sound made by the western hoary marmots
that lived among the rocks. Before Whistler became known as a winter
ski resort it initially thrived as a summer fish resort. In 1962,
four businessmen made a bid to host the winter Olympics in Whistler
but were unsuccessful. Their new plan was to transform Whistler
into a ski hill. Almost 50 years later, Whistler has been able
to accomplish both goals. It has become a successful winter ski
resort and hosted the Winter Olympics.
Kenji: Wow! Whistler is such a beautiful place at this
time of the year. There is lots of snow and the mountains make
a gorgeous backdrop.
Yumi: I wonder what this place is like in the summer.
It must be deserted because there obviously isn’t any snow for skiing
at that time of the year.
Kenji: Actually, Whistler is busy all year round. There
are many things to do here. During the summer people can go hiking,
golfing, horseback riding, rock climbing sailing, swimming, and
lots more! Visit Tourism Whistler at www.mywhistler.com to get
a complete list of activities. It was actually ranked by Canadian
Travel Press as the Best Summer Destination.
Yumi: Sounds like a great place to live. It’s only
about a 1.5-hour drive from Vancouver, making Whistler a great place
for Vancouverites to visit when they want to get away for just the
weekend.
Kenji: Whistler has gained a lot of publicity over the
last few years. It was also ranked by Skiing Magazine as one of
the world’s premiere ski destinations.
Yumi: In 1996, Whistler had a population of 7,172 which
grew to 8,894 in 2001.
