Your Mission to Earthquake Math Trail

The year is 2010, and all of the athletes of the Olympiad have arrived in Vancouver. The atmosphere is electric and everyone is enjoying the epitome of athletic competition. Unfortunately, you, as the leading Seismologist in the Vancouver area, are a little more stressed. You have reason to believe that a very large earthquake may soon strike! You have tried to warn people of the potential danger, but without calculations and other evidence, nobody will believe you. This package will help you in your quest to warn the people of Vancouver and all the athletes and spectators of the 2010 Olympic games.

The first thing you will need to describe to people is how an earthquake occurs. This information has been provided for you. You will also interpret the readings of seismic stations placed throughout British Columbia, calculate the epicentre (origin point) of the earthquake, and find a correlation between earthquake magnitudes and casualties. You will also need to explain the Richter scale. This information should enable you to convince most people if the dangers of the impending quake. After this you will need to provide some information to help insure, prepare for, and avoid the after effects of this tremendous quake.

This is a mission that must be accomplished, as there could be thousands of lives at stake. Take great care to ensure that your calculations are correct and be ready to warn the world.
