Entered employ of Merchants’ Loan & Trust, Co., Chicago, 1861; cashier same (succeeding Lyman J. Gage), 1868-78; banker and broker from 1878; has served as broker in connection with many large corporate enterprises, including the sale for English cos. of the American Brewing & Malting Co., and the Union Stock Yards Co., and Am. rep. of large financial interests in London and on the European continent. Mem., New York Stock Exchange, Chicago Stock Exchange (prin. founder and Pres., 3 terms), Chicago Bd. of Trade. Dir. World’s Fair, Chicago, 1893. Resident consul for Belgium, 1876 —, for Turkey, 1877 —; became consul gen. for Turkey, Knight Order of Leopold (Belgium), 1889; later officer same ord, and comdr. Ottoman Medjidie; cmdr.
