Ice Hockey

Meanwhile, Yumi is flipping through the program and reviewing the descriptions of some of the hockey players expected to be playing tonight.

Yumi:     I wonder what the average weight of a hockey player is? Some of these guys are pretty big.

Mathu:   You're right, Yumi. Hockey players aren’t small guys! Not only do these players have great skills, they are also very strong and can hit pretty hard. Their size becomes quite advantageous to them in the game. If we take, for example, the roster for the Canadian Olympic Men’s hockey team for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games held in Salt Lake City, we could pretty much get a good estimate of the average weight for this year's team.

Kenji:     Oh look! The players are coming onto the ice now. Wow, this is exciting!

Mathu:   Yeah, this is the warm up where the players come out for a practice skate. They begin by skating around the perimeter of the rink.

Kenji:     Yes, I know that. I'm just really excited, that's all.

During the warm-up skate just prior to the start of the game, Mathu and Kenji observe the players skating around the perimeter of the rink.  Being the know-it-all that Mathu is when it comes to hockey he repeats what he knows about the larger dimensions of the Olympic size rink as compared to the NHL size rink.

Mathu:   Did you know that the width of the Olympic rink is 200 feet by 100 feet, whereas the NHL rink measures only 200 feet by 85 feet?

Kenji:     Yes Mathu, you mentioned that not more than 5 minutes ago. Why do you think that is?

Mathu:   Well, it gives the players more room to skate and creates a game that is more free-flowing where players can interchange positions often and easily.

Kenji:     Look! There’s Joe Sakic and Owen Nolan! They are skating around the rink in opposite directions. How fast do you think they’re going?

And they worked it out

Kenji:     Wow! Joe Sakic sure is a fast skater! Look, the players are now shooting the puck around. This is great!

Mathu:   If you think that’s impressive wait until you see how fast players can shoot that puck.  The puck they use in hockey has a 3 inch diameter and only weighs 6 ounces, but it can be shot between 90 and 100 miles per hour. I was at the 2002-2003 All-Star Skills Competition and Al MacInnis of the St. Louis Blues won the hardest shot contest with a 98.9 mile per hour1 slap shot!

Kenji:     I can’t wait for this game to begin.

Mathu:   Really? I couldn’t tell
