Graduates from the Honours Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) degree are eligible to write the NCLEX-RN Examination and the College of Nurses of Ontario Jurisprudence Examination.

Admissions

The BScN is a limited enrolment program. Admission is not guaranteed by attainment of the minimum requirements.

Program Notes
  1. In order to proceed to year 2 as a Nursing major, a student must pass all year 1 courses and achieve a minimum 65 percent overall average in year 1 courses. This will be determined at the end of the Winter term.
  2. Failure to succeed in any two clinical courses will result in dismissal from the program.
  3. Clinical courses are graded Pass/Fail, with the exception of NUSC 1F18 and 4F92.
  4. Students require current CPR (BCLS, Level C or HCP) certification and annual re-certification as well as N-95 mask fit testing every two years. Both certificates must be valid throughout the clinical placement and submitted to Synergy Gateway Inc. All documentation must be submitted, and the Electronic Student Permit Checking (ESPC) appointment completed, by the following deadine: June 1 for returning students; first day of fall term for new incoming students. Any student who fails the appointment must work with Synergy Gateway Inc. to receive clearance. Students may be charged for subsequent appointments. Students will not be permitted to register in a clinical course or be placed in a clinical group until clearance is received. Refer to Program Note # 10. It is the student's responsibility to monitor their Synergy Gateway Inc. profile.
  5. Proof of Immunizations is due prior to registration for clinical courses and must be submitted to Synergy Gateway Inc. by the deadlines listed in Program Note #4. Failure to comply with due date will result in student not being permitted to register in clinical courses for current academic year. Immunization screening required: COVID-19 (2 doses), Measles, Mumps, Rubella; Varicella (Chicken Pox); Hepatitis B; Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis; Tuberculosis. Annual TB Skin Testing is also required. Positive TB tests require chest Xrays every two years.
  6. Police record check, with a vulnerable sector screening may be required by clinical agencies. It is the student's responsibility to ensure the process is complete - at their own expense. In some cases, the student may not be allowed to attend clinical if these requirements are not met. Students will be notified when this is required.
  7. Students have six years to complete degree requirements.
  8. Students who have not registered for one nursing course in each calendar year will be removed from the program unless they have been granted a leave of absence by the Chair.
  9. A student who has not successfully completed a clinical course for one year or longer will be required to complete a re-entry process consisting of online learning modules and in-person lab time prior to registering for the next clinical course. The student will be charged a fee. If the student is unsuccessful in the re-entry process, the student must repeat a previous clinical course at the discretion of the Chair.
  10. Students will not be permitted to register for clinical courses less than two weeks prior to the start of term.
  11. In order to progress to NUSC 4F96 and NUSC 4F98 a student must have completed all other nursing program requirements.
  12. Placement providers now require that any students, Faculty members, or Clinical Instructors coming on the placement provider's premises be vaccinated for COVID-19 or have an approved exemption. Students and Department of Nursing faculty and staff must follow the requirements of placement providers while on placement. To assist with the above requirement and help determine if you meet the eligibility criteria set by the placement provider, Brock will track COVID-19 information (including COVID-19 vaccine status and rapid antigen testing information) for current students, Faculty, and Clinical Instructors and may share COVID-19 information with assigned placement providers.   13. In 20 credit degree programs a maximum of eight credits may be numbered 1(alpha)00 to 1(alpha)99; at least three credits must be numbered 2(alpha)90 or above; at least three credits must be numbered 3(alpha)90 or above; and the remaining credits must be numbered 2(alpha)00 or above.
    In some circumstances, in order to meet university degree and program requirements, more than 20 credits may be taken.

Nursing Theory and Clinical Practicum: Experiencing Illness and Hospitalization
Introductory concepts in health, illness, and wellness. Theoretical application and integration of psycho-social-motor knowledge, skills and abilities related to nursing practice in caring for adult clients experiencing illness and hospitalization.

Core competencies for effective teamwork. Topics include collaborative leadership, team functioning, communication, role clarity, conflict management, and client-centred approach as it applies to a diversity of interprofessional settings.
Lectures, 3 hours per week.
Restriction: open to NUBR, NUSC, BKin, BMED, BPhEd, BPhEd (Honours)/BEd (Intermediate/Senior), BPhEd (Honours)/BEd (Junior/Intermediate), BSc (Kin), CHHS, CHLH, CMTY, MSCI, PHTH, RECL and SPMA majors with a minimum of 9.0 overall credits.
