The Department of Kinesiology offers a 20-credit Bachelor of Kinesiology (BKin) degree, a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology (BSc (Kin)) degree and a direct entry Bachelor of Kinesiology (BKin)/Masters of Professional Kinesiology (MPK) degree. It also offers a 20 credit Bachelor of Physical Education (BPhEd) and six-year Concurrent Bachelor of Physical Education (Honours)/Bachelor of Education (BPhEd (Honours)/BEd) Intermediate/Senior and BPhEd (Honours)/BEd Junior/Intermediate degrees.

Requirement for graduation with a BKin (Honours), BSc (Kin) (Honours) or BPhEd (Honours) degree is a minimum 70 percent major average and a minimum 60 percent non-major average. Requirement for graduation with a BKin, BSc (Kin) with Major or BPhEd with Major degree is a minimum 60 percent major average and a minimum 60 percent overall average.

Students who are entering into Years 2 and 3 are eligible to submit new applications to the BKin, BSc(Kin) or BPhEd programs. Application forms are available here https://brocku.ca/registrar/toolkit/forms/#changes-appeals and are listed under Declare/Change of Major Forms. This form must be completed and returned to the academic advisors office by May 15. These are limited enrolment programs. Admission is not guaranteed by attainment of the minimum requirements.

The BKin degree focuses on the biophysical, behavioural and socio-cultural aspects of kinesiology and is based on a science-practice model that prepares students for selected certification in the allied health professions emphasizing bioscience courses, the development of research skills and the application of theoretical knowledge in laboratory settings.

The BSc (Kin) degree focuses on the biophysical aspects of kinesiology and prepares students for careers in various health professions. This bioscience degree is designed for the student who wishes to concentrate on the science of human movement and prepares students to meet the requirements for postgraduate degree programs in biophysical kinesiology and the allied health professions.

The Accelerate into Masters (AIM) program allows a limited number of students (10 per year) direct entry into both a four year BKin and a one year Masters of Professional Kinesiology (MPK) allowing for the completion of two degrees within five years. Students may also choose to decline the MPK program following the completion of their BKin degree to accommodate for changes to their career and/or academic aspirations.

Students in this program must continue to meet current BKin criteria to remain in the program (see program notes). Continued admissibility into the MPK requires a minimum overall average of 78 per cent in the final two years of the BKin degree (see https://brocku.ca/applied-health-sciences/master-of-professional-kinesiology/).

The BPhEd degree provides students with a broadly based understanding of the discipline through theoretical and practical courses in physical education. This program allows maximum opportunity for students to pursue various combinations of courses in teaching, coaching, programming and administration within their particular areas of interest (see Physical Education Subfields).

Successful graduates of the Concurrent BPhEd (Honours)/BEd degree will receive an Honours Bachelor of Physical Education degree and a Bachelor of Education degree. The Dean of the Faculty of Education may recommend that the Ontario College of Teachers grant Ontario Certificate of Qualification certifying them to teach either Junior/Intermediate (grades 4-10) or Intermediate/Senior (grades 7-12).

Program Notes
  1. Students wishing to proceed to year 2 as a BKin or BSc (Kin) major must have achieved a minimum 65 percent major average, a minimum of 65 percent in KINE 1P90 and 1P88, a minimum 60 percent non-major average, and a minimum 60 percent overall average. Students wishing to proceed to year 3 and 4 as either a BKin or BSc (Kin) major must have achieved a minimum 60 percent major average, a minimum 60 percent non-major average and a minimum of 60 percent overall average. Students not meeting the above requirements will be listed as majors in the Bachelor of Applied Health (AGEN). See Academic Regulations regarding repeating courses.
  2. BKin and BSc (Kin) majors must take a minimum of one elective credit outside the Department of Kinesiology.
  3. BSc (Kin) majors must take a minimum of 2.5 elective science credits.
  4. BKin and BSc (Kin) majors are required to have current emergency First Aid/CPR certification upon application to graduate.

Minor in Sport Injury Management

Students in the Department of Kinesiology may obtain a minor in Sport Injury Management. To be eligible to apply students must complete KINE 1P98 and KINE 3P80 with a minimum grade of 75 percent. The minor will be capped at 20 students per year and applications are to be submitted by the start of third year. To complete the minor students must successfully complete the following courses with a minimum 70 percent overall average:

Overview of the musculoskeletal system including the anatomical features of bones and muscles, joint actions, skeletal and muscular movements, the spinal cord, and appendicular peripheral nerves and blood vessels.

Muscle electrical activity during voluntary contractions and by peripheral nerve stimulation for the life sciences. Techniques for measuring, analyzing, and interpreting muscle electrical activity for both clinical and kinesiological applications.
Lectures, 2 hours per week; lab, 2 hours bi-weekly.

Core competencies for effective teamwork. Topics include collaborative leadership, team functioning, communication, role clarity, conflict management, and client-centered approach as it applies to a diversity of interprofessional settings.
