Various forms of financial support are available to graduate students. In addition to the scholarships and awards listed below, Brock University awards fellowships, scholarships, bursaries and teaching assistantships to incoming and full-time returning students on the basis of academic merit. Students' admission letters are accompanied by a Student Financial Funding Information Form that outlines, where appropriate, their particular graduate funding package. Information and definitions regarding financial support can be found at: brocku.ca/graduate-studies/current-students Students are encouraged to check the Graduate Studies website: brocku.ca/graduate-studies/current-students for scholarship and award competition dates and applications. Graduate students are encouraged to apply for any of the awards and scholarships for which they are eligible. To be eligible to apply for internal and external awards, scholarships and bursaries, graduate students must be registered as a full-time student. A student who is withdrawn from the university or has a change of status will have their scholarship eligibility reviewed and adjustments to their financial support. |

Applications for Internal Graduate Scholarships are available on the Faculty of Graduate Studies website at brocku.ca/graduate-studies/current-students/student-forms Chancellors Chairs' Graduate Scholarship in Physics Value: $1001 An annual award to a student who is entering or continuing in a graduate program in Physics who demonstrates academic excellence and financial need. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Faculty and Staff from the Department of Physics Application Deadline Date: February 1. Danielle Anne Parks Memorial Scholarship Value: $1869 An annual award to a graduate student in the Classics program whose research is in Greco-Roman culture and history. The student's research must require travel to the Mediterranean or to view a collection on Greco-Roman culture and history in Europe or a Mediterranean country. This scholarship may not be used for unstructured travel. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Marinelli/Niagara Duty Free Shops Scholarship An award made annually to either an undergraduate or a graduate student who is enrolled in a program in the Faculty of Business and who is a resident of the Niagara peninsula. The applicant must meet Ontario residency requirements and demonstrate financial need. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships to receive the award annually throughout his or her Brock career, contingent on maintaining a minimum 75 per cent average. Murray and Elizabeth Surtees Niagara Historical Society Post-Graduate Scholarship in the History of Niagara Value: $1864 An annual award to a graduate student in the MA in History graduate program carrying out their major research paper on a Niagara local history subject, preferably focused on such topics as the political, economic, social, industrial, agricultural, maritime, or related history of the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake or former township of Niagara. Should no eligible student be researching within the narrowly defined geographic area described above, a major research paper on a topic as above within the Niagara Region will be considered. The recipient will donate a hard copy and electronic format of their paper, prior to their convocation ceremony, to the Niagara Historical Society. The student award recipient retains copyright to their major research paper while the Niagara Historical Society will have full, unrestricted and unimpeded reproduction rights to the document and may market it in pamphlet form or as part of an anthology. David Goicoechea Award Value: $928 An annual award to a student who has graduated from the Brock undergraduate degree program in Philosophy and is entering into the Brock Master's program in Philosophy. Department of Physics Graduate Scholarship Value: $1021 An annual award to a full-time graduate student in the first or subsequent year of a graduate program in Physics. Dick Pound Award Value: $177 An annual award to a full-time graduate student in a Master's program in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences who demonstrates financial need and meet Ontario residency requirements. Distinguished Graduating Student Award Value: $100 Awarded to the most distinguished graduate for each graduate program. The award and a certificate will be awarded at Spring convocation. No application is required. Dr. G.M.C. Sprung Memorial Award Value: $333 An annual award to a graduate student in the Master's program in Philosophy who has achieved a minimum average of 75%. Dr. Raymond and Mrs. Sachi Moriyama Graduate Fellowship Value: $3785/student An annual award to an entering graduate student in each of the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, Education, Humanities, Mathematics and Science and Social Sciences. Donor: Dr. Raymond and Mrs. Sachi Moriyama No application is required. Edgar and Irmgard Penner Scholarship Value: $3272 Awarded annually to one or more international students, in the first or subsequent year of a graduate program, who has achieved high academic standing and does not receive financial support from his/her country. Ellen Speck Memorial Bursary Value: $336 An annual bursary to a graduate student in the Political Science program, who demonstrates financial need. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Denis and Norma Murphy Application Deadline Date: February 1. Excellence in Research Award Value: $1,500/student An annual award to three graduate students who have displayed excellence in research. The recipient may be full-time, part-time, domestic or international. Each graduate program may nominate one student for each relevant award category. The successful recipients will receive acknowledgment at the Spring convocation. No application is required. Faculty of Education Fellowships Value: $1,500 A maximum of three graduate fellowships are awarded each year to new and continuing full-time students in the Master of Education program who have achieved high academic standing. Prospective candidates for fellowships will be considered on application for admission to the Master of Education program. Continuing students will be considered after successful completion of their first year of study. In order to qualify, students must be registered as full-time students. Faculty of Education Graduate Bursary Value: $1,000 A number of graduate bursaries are awarded each year to continuing full-time students in the Master of Education program who are experiencing financial difficulties. Only one such bursary can be obtained during the student's Master of Education program. Application details and deadlines can be obtained from the Faculty of Education. Applicants must provide evidence of on-going participation in the program, a statement outlining financial need, and a reference letter from a full-time faculty member describing the student's academic progress. No application is required. Fidelis Kambilige Memorial Scholarship in Political Science Value: $221 An annual award to a graduate student currently enrolled in the MA Political Science graduate program who demonstrates academic merit. Preference is given to a student from Ghana. If there is no eligible Ghanaian student, the scholarship is to be awarded to an international student. Ronald Brown Graduate Award Value: $598 An annual award to a full-time student in good standing in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science who has demonstrated financial need. Applicants must complete an Application for internal Graduate Scholarships. The award was established in 2002 in memory of Dean Ron Brown. Finlay Scholarship Value: to be determined An annual award to an outstanding graduate student in Chemistry who has an excellent record in research, course work and demonstrating. Preference will be given to international students. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships, available from the Graduate Studies. Donor: The G. R. Governor General's Gold Medal The Governor General's Gold Medal is awarded at Spring convocation to a graduate student who achieves the highest academic standing in a graduate degree program. Graduates from both the Spring and the previous Fall convocation are eligible. No application is required. Harrison-Thompson Bursary Trust Value: $5,000 (one award for each listed faculty) An annual award for one full-time student in each of the five faculties, Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, Business, Humanities, Mathematics and Science, Social Sciences. The award is renewable based on academic excellence and the recipient must demonstrate financial need. The recipient must meet Ontario residency requirements and demonstrate financial need. The student must complete the Harrison-Thompson Bursary Trust Application. Donor: Bernard Harrison Application Deadline Date: February 1. Ida Marietta Houston Graduate Scholarship Value: $3742 An annual award to a graduate student in Applied Health Sciences Graduate program who demonstrates academic merit. Preference will be given to a student whose education or research focuses on palliative care. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. John Edds Prize in Master of Accountancy Value: $400.00 An annual award to a student who has demonstrated academic excellence in the Master of Accountancy program. The candidate will be selected by the Faculty of Business. Donor: John Edds International Society for Electrophysiology and Kinesiology (ISEK) John V. Basmajian Memorial Graduate Award Value: $392 An annual award to a full-time domestic or international MA, MSc or PhD graduate student in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences. The student must demonstrate high academic merit and be conducting research related to electromographic kinesiology of skeletal muscle. This award is not applicable to research into cardiac muscle, cardiology, or cardiac rehabilitation. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships and must submit the following documents. 1. A standard abstract formatted in accordance with the ISEK submission guidelines (contact Applied Health Science graduate program for Appendix 1) 2. A two-page (600 word) outline should explain the rationale for the work, purpose and/or hypothesis, research design, results, discussion that highlights the significance of the work and key references. Up to two figures may be included within the two-page limit. 3. A one-page (300 word) letter from the student's supervisor that explains the role and contribution(s) of the applicant to the research project. Jack Noble Book Prize Value: Certificate from the Brock University Bookstore The book prize is awarded to a Master of Education student at Spring and Fall Convocations, who has achieved the highest academic standing in the program. The prize is awarded in the name of Jack Noble on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education. Donor: Jack Noble No application is required. John Edds Prize in Master of Accountancy Value: $400 An annual award to a student who has demonstrated academic excellence in the Master of Accountancy program. The candidate will be nominated by the Faculty of Business. Donor: John Edds No application is required. Leading the Way Graduate Student Scholarship Value: $965 An annual award to an entering or current graduate student in any graduate program and who demonstrates academic merit. Donor: Faculty and Staff of Brock University Application is not required. Marilyn J. Rose Graduate Award for Academic Excellence in English Language and Literature Value: $1220 An annual award to a outstanding thesis or major research paper student enrolled in the Master of Arts program in English. This award will support the student during the writing of the exit research requirement and will be paid during the student's final (normally Spring) term. Martin Kusy Faculty of Business Graduate Scholarship Value: $2238 An annual award to an entering student in the Faculty of Business who can demonstrate academic merit. This scholarship will be rotated among the five Faculty of Business graduate programs - Master of Business Administration, Master of Business Administration (International Student Program), Master of Accountancy, International Master of Accountancy and Master of Science in Management. Mohamed Dore Graduate Research Scholarship in Economics Value: $1666 An annual award to a student who demonstrates academic merit and is pursuing a graduate degree through the Department of Economics, or an MSc through the Faculty of Business, and is actively involved in research in the area of economics. Preference will be given to students who are bilingual in any two languages. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Niagara District Chartered Accountants Association Award in Master of Accountancy Value: $666 Awarded to a student entering the Master of Accountancy (MAcc) program with the highest entering average and demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to students from the Niagara Region. The student will be nominated by the department/program. Applicants must meet OSAP residency requirements and complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Oded Bar-Or Graduate Travel Award in Pediatric Exercise Medicine Value: $1022 An annual award to a student in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences graduate program who demonstrates financial need and high academic standing. An international student working in the area of Pediatric Exercise Medicine may be considered. This award is primarily used to help offset the travel costs incurred in the presentation of their research in the field of Pediatric Exercise Medicine at a national or international scientific conference. Ontario Paper Thorold Foundation Graduate Award Value: $1440 An annual award to a graduate student pursuing a graduate degree with a focus on environmental issues, and who has a high academic standing. President's Surgite Award Value: to be determined, plus a Certificate of Recognition The award is intented to recognize those students who have been outstanding in one or more of the following areas: demonstrated exemplary leadership in a student club, organization association or team; did something exceptional that helped to advance Brock's academic reputation; made a significant contribution to student life at Brock; provided a valuable service to Brock or the broader community. Applicants are selected by the Senate Committee on Awards and Bursaries. Professor John R. A. Mayer Graduate Scholarship Value: $870 An award made annually to a graduate student in the Master's degree program in Philosophy who has the highest academic standing. Applicants must meet Ontario residency requirements and complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Brock Philosophical Society Application Deadline Date: February 1. Ralph D. Morris Graduate Student Award Value: $500 An annual award to a full-time student in the first or second-year of graduate studies at Brock University who demonstrates personal characteristics such as an enquiring and innovative mind; a spirit of confidence and independence; research ability and maturity; and a high potential for future leadership within the student’s academic area. The student will have been involved in either graduate representation on University committees or university activities that reflect well upon graduate students. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Please note, a letter of support from the student’s supervisor must be included with the application. Spironello Memorial Fellowship Value: $349 An annual award to an entering or current student in the Biological Sciences graduate program. The student must demonstrate academic merit and community or environmental service and/or other external activities such as interest in the arts, music, nature and/or other external activities such as interests in the arts, music, nature and/or physical activity. Bidochka) Application Deadline Date: February 1. The Vice President of Research Award An annual award to an entering international graduate student in a faculty other than Business or Education. Thompson-Harrison Graduate Scholarship Value: $824 An annual award to an international student studying Physics at the graduate level who has achieved a high academic standing in-course and whose studies are not fully funded by his/her government. Should no physics international graduate student qualify, the scholarship will be awarded to a top chemistry graduate student, qualifying under the same conditions. In the event that no international student qualifies, the scholarship will be awarded, in the first instance, to a physics student who has attained a high academic standing on entry or in-course. Should no physics student qualify, the scholarship will be awarded to a chemistry student, qualifying under the same conditions. Vern and Donna Sutherland Memorial Bursary Value: to be determined An annual bursary to an undergraduate or graduate student in financial need without regard to the year of study. Hatch Memorial Scholarship Value: $1157 An annual award to an outstanding student during the first or second-year of a graduate program. The candidate must have a first-class academic standing and thesis research is concerned with, in the first instance, in the field of viticulture or oenology or, secondly, with the application of Biotechnology relating to agriculture. The recipient must demonstrate financial need and meet Ontario residency requirements. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: W. Douglas Hatch Application Deadline Date: February 1 Wendy Murphy Memorial Awards Value: $1500 The award will be made annually to a returning Psychology graduate student based on consistent academic excellence and collegiality. Zelma Reive Graduate Bursary Value: $477 An annual award to a graduate student in good standing in the Political Science program, who demonstrates financial need. External Scholarships and Awards Coordinated by the Faculty of Graduate Studies at Brock University Autism Scholars Award With the support of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, a Scholar Awards Program in Autism has been established to ensure that Ontario attracts and retains pre-eminent scholars. The community of autism scholars fostered by this Awards Program will excel, according to internationally accepted standards of scientific excellence, in the creation of new knowledge concerning child autism, and its translation into improved health for children, more effective services and products for children with autism, and increase the province's capacity in diagnosis and assessment of autism and a strengthened treatment system. For 2010-11, up to two awards at the Master's level and up to two awards at the Doctoral level will be made: Master's Award - $18,000 per annum Doctoral Award - $20,000 per annum For further information and application form, please visit the website: Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario Research Master's Studentship Awards Value: $18,500 per annum for two years The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario is continuing to offer a limited number of Master's Studentship awards to highly qualified candidates who have completed or are in the last year of a Baccalaureate degree. Candidates will undertake full-time training in cardiovascular/cerebrovascular research under an identified academic supervisor. Please note that graduates possessing a medical degree must apply to the national HSF Fellowship program. Candidates must not hold another major award concurrently. The awardee may not have held a prior faculty appointment. The Master's studentships are tenable at Ontario universities to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada studying in Ontario who have achieved a minimum of 80% on course work completed in the last two years of study. Applicants may already be enrolled in a Master's program. The duration of the award will then be adjusted to accurately reflect the remaining period of study. Awards will take effect only after the recipient has registered full-time in an eligible (i.e., relevant to cardiovascular/cerebrovascular research) Master's program. Its value has been $10,000 but is subject to change. The Mackenzie King Travelling Scholarship is open to graduates of any Canadian university who engage in (commence or continue) postgraduate study, in the United States or the United Kingdom, of international relations or industrial relations (including the international or industrial relations aspects of law, history, politics and economics). Four Travelling Scholarships of $11,000 have lately been awarded annually, but the number and value of the scholarships are subject to change. The awards will be based on high academic achievements (all A's or very nearly so), personal qualities and demonstrated aptitudes. Consideration will also be given to the applicant's proposed program of study. For further information and application forms, please visit the website: mkingscholarships.ca Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) is a national funding organization that invests in Canada's capability in science and technology in the natural sciences and in engineering. NSERC offers Postgraduate Scholarships (PGS) which provide financial support to high-calibre scholars who are engaged in Master's or Doctoral programs in the natural sciences or engineering. This support allows these scholars to fully concentrate on their studies and to seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields. PGS Master's awards are valued at $17,300 per annum for one year. PGS Doctoral awards are valued at $21,000 per annum for up to three years. The Government of Canada has recently offered the prestigious Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) program. The CGS program assists in ensuring a reliable supply of highly qualified personnel to meet the needs of Canada's knowledge economy. As of 2008, the Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) will be known as the Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship. CGS Master's awards are valued at $17,500 per annum for one year. CGS Doctoral awards are valued at $35,000 per annum for up to three years. Industrial Postgraduate Scholarships (IPS) provide financial support for highly qualified science and engineering graduates. The support allows them to gain research experience in industry while undertaking advanced studies in Canada. These scholarships are aimed at encouraging scholars to consider research careers in industry where they will be able to contribute to strengthening Canadian innovation. NSERC IPS award is valued at $15,000 per annum for up to two years plus company contribution of $6,000 minimum a year. Application forms and further details for all of the NSERC scholarships can be obtained from the website: http://www.nserc.ca Social Sciences of Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) is an arm's-length federal agency that promotes and supports university-based research and training in the social sciences and humanities. The SSHRC Master's scholarship is valued at $17,500 per annum for one year and the SSHRC Doctoral scholarship is $20,000 per annum for up to four years. SSHRC offers Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) which provide financial support to the most outstanding eligible scholars pursuing master's or doctoral studies in a Canadian university. As of 2008, the Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) will be known as the Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship. The CGS Master's scholarship is valued at $17,500 per annum for one year. The CGS Doctoral scholarship is valued at $35,000 per annum for up to three years. The Government of Canada established these prestigious scholarships, to be awarded through national competitions by the granting agencies, to ensure a reliable supply of highly qualified personnel to meet the needs of Canada's knowledge economy. Canada Graduate Scholars will help renew faculty at Canadian universities and will be the research leaders of tomorrow. Application forms and further details for all of the SSHRC scholarships can be obtained from the website: http://www.sshrc.ca CIHR Canada Graduate Scholarships Master's Awards Value: $17,500 per annum for one year The Canada Graduate Scholarships Master's Awards administered by CIHR are intended to provide special recognition and support to students who are pursuing a Master's degree in a health related field in Canada. These candidates are expected to have an exceptionally high potential for future research achievement and productivity. As of 2008, the CGS Scholarships will be known as the Sir Frederick Banting and Dr. Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarship. Application forms and further details can be obtained from the website: cihr-irsc.gc.ca/ Ontario Graduate Scholarships Value: $5,000 per academic term for three terms The Province of Ontario offers scholarships (in conjunction with Brock University) to master's and doctoral students in or entering graduate programs. The Scholarships are tenable at the Ontario University of the student's choice. To be eligible for consideration by the Foundation, candidates must be applying into the first year of a doctoral program, or must be registered in the first or second-year of such a program.
