Linguistics is concerned with the systematic study of language structure, the acquisition of first and subsequent languages, the role of language in communication, and the status of language as the product of particular cultures and other social groups. A background in linguistics is essential for language teachers, translators, speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and many other language
professionals.

The Department of Applied Language Studies offers programs of study leading to an Honours degree with specializations in Speech and Language Sciences, Hearing Sciences, Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language (TESL), or Applied Linguistics. As well the Honours Applied Linguistics and Honours TESL streams offer a Co-op option. Students may also elect a four-year program of study leading to a BA with a Major in Applied Language Studies, with specialization in Speech and Language Sciences. BA 3 Year (Pass) degrees in Applied Language Studies are also available, with specialization in Speech and Language Sciences or Hearing Sciences.

The four-year degree programs (Honours, BA with a Major) give students the opportunity to prepare for employment (e.g., TESL) or for admission to post-baccalaureate training in a variety of fields. Students who intend to pursue a BEd degree or graduate study specifically in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology should complete the Honours program. The Department also offers a Communication Disorders Assistants Certificate, a Certificate in Speech and Language Sciences or Hearing Sciences and a Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language/Foreign Language. Courses concerning the structure of American Sign Language and English as a Second Language/Subsequent Language are also offered.

English as a Second Language courses (APLS) are designed to enhance and develop the English speaking and writing ability of students whose native language is not English.

Students with scores below TOEFL 580, TOEFL CBT 237, MELAB 90, IELTS 7.0 or ITELP 625 who have been accepted into academic programs are required to register in APLS 1P90 and APLS 1P91 in Year 1 along with no more than four credits.

The Department offers four streams, allowing students to specialize in Speech and Language Sciences, Hearing Sciences, Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language, or Applied Linguistics. Students must choose one of the four streams by the end of Year 1.

Speech and Language Sciences Stream
This stream provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to learn about basic communication processes, including the anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing, acoustics, linguistics, and child language development, and about selected disorders of human communication. Honours students have the opportunity to prepare for admission to graduate study in speech-language pathology; admissions to graduate schools are, however, offered only on a competitive basis. The minimum qualification to practise speech-language pathology in Canada and the United States is a Master's degree. Students in the four-year BA with a Major and Pass BA programs have the opportunity to prepare for admission to post-baccalaureate training as Communication Disorders Assistants, or for admission to a Faculty of Education.

Hearing Sciences Stream
This stream provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to learn about basic sciences (e.g., biology, physics), basic communication processes, including the anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing, acoustics, linguistics, and child language development, and about selected disorders of human communication. Honours students have the opportunity to prepare for admission to clinical doctorate programs in audiology (AuD); admissions to graduate schools are, however, offered only on a competitive basis. The minimum qualification to practice audiology in Canada and the United States is currently a Master's degree. Students in the Pass BA program have the opportunity to prepare for admission to post-baccalaureate training as Communication Disorders Assistants, or for admission to a Faculty of Education.

Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language (TESL) Stream (Honours only)
This stream is offered as a four-year Honours program and provides background in theories and methodologies relevant to the learning and teaching of English as a second or foreign language. A four year Co-op option is available.

Students interested in teaching language in the Ontario school system should consult the Ministry of Education and Training guidelines. In those guidelines, 'Language Courses' mean English or any teachable (modern language) subject.

Applied Linguistics Stream
This stream offers students the opportunity to learn about the analysis of language. Along with an introductory course in linguistics (LING 1F94), the Department offers foundation courses focusing on the sounds of language (phonetics and phonology), relationships among words in language (syntax), mutual influence between culture (and other group membership) and language (sociolinguistics), and ways in which language is used in context (pragmatics and discourse analysis) and is acquired. A four year co-op option is available.

Students who wish to major in Applied Language Studies (in any area of specialization) must apply to declare their major. Declaration of Major forms are available from the Office of the Registrar and on-line at http://www.brocku.ca/registrar/forms/index.html. Students in three- and four-year degree programs normally register for courses according to the program of study effective at the time they first declared their major.

The faculty of the Department of Applied Language Studies believe that students benefit from a broadly based liberal arts background in conjunction with a major in Applied Language Studies. Honours students are therefore encouraged to acquire some background in other academic disciplines as part of their undergraduate education. Students who wish to pursue a four-year degree (Honours and BA with a Major) must apply to be admitted to Year 4 after completing 15 credits. The requirements for graduation with a BA (Honours) are a minimum 70 percent major average and a minimum 60 percent non-major average. The requirements for a BA with a Major are a minimum 60 percent major average and a minimum 60 percent overall average.

Co-op Program
The Applied Linguistics and TESL Co-op streams combine academic and two volunteer work placements in language-rich environments over a four-year period. Students spend two year in an academic setting prior to taking the first work placement. In addition to the current fees for courses in academic study terms Linguistics Co-op students are assessed an annual administrative fee (see Schedule of Fees).

Students admitted to the co-op program must follow the Co-op program schedule. Failure to adhere to the schedule may result in removal from the Linguistics Co-op program. Eligibility to continue is based on the student's major average and non-major average. A students with a minimum 70 percent major average and a minimum 60 percent non-major average will be permitted to continue. A student with major average lower than 70 percent may not continue in the Linguistics Co-op program, but may continue in the regular Applied Linguistics or TESL stream. If a student subsequently raises his/her major average to 70 oercent, the student may be readmitted only if approved by the Co-op Admissions Committee.

The Linguistics Co-op designation will be awarded to those students who have honours standing and who have successfully completed the two Co-op placements.

Language Requirement for Humanities Majors

Except for Linguistics and Child Studies Combined majors, students in the Department Applied Language Studies are required to complete one credit in a language other than English. Where half-credit courses are used to satisfy the requirement, both half-credits must be in the same language. Non-Indo-European language courses (such as Mandarin Chinese or Japanese) or Sign Language courses are recommended.

Context credits and language requirement must normally be completed within the first 10 credits.
In all 20 credit degree programs, at least 12 credits must be numbered 2(alpha)00 or above, six of which must be numbered 2(alpha)90 or above and of these, three must be numbered 3(alpha)90 or above. In all 15 credit degree programs, at least seven credits must be numbered 2(alpha)00 or above, three of which must be numbered 2(alpha)90 or above.

Certificate Programs

The Department of Applied Language Studies offers a Communication Disorders Assistants Certificate, a Certificate in Hearing Sciences, a Certificate in Speech and Language Sciences and a Certificate in Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL) for those who already possess an undergraduate degree.

Communication Disorders Assistants Certificate
Communication Disorders Assistants (also called Communicative Disorders Assistants, Speech-Language Pathology Assistants, or Audiology Assistants) are supportive personnel who work under the supervision of Speech-Language Pathologists or Audiologists. Their duties typically include preparing therapy materials for adults and/or children who have communication and/or swallowing disorders, conducting individual and/or group therapy sessions, reporting on therapy outcomes, and carrying out routine maintenance on clinical equipment. Communication Disorders Assistants (CDAs) are employed in the same settings as Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists, including hospitals, school boards, specialized rehabilitation centres, and private practice.

The program is designed to inform students about therapeutic principles and approaches that are applicable to a variety of communication disorders, and to prepare them for employment as CDAs. This program has been designed to reflect descriptions of supportive personnel from the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO) and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

Students may apply to the program after completing the Speech and Language Sciences stream degree, Hearing Sciences stream degree or equivalent with an minimum overall average of 60 percent. Enrolment is limited. Applicants must submit a resume, official transcript(s), a letter of intent, and two letters of reference. Prospective students should contact the Department for additional information.

Field placements are an integral component of this certificate program; students must successfully complete both placements (held after the completion of all credit courses) to graduate.

The certificate is awarded upon completion of the following courses with an overall average of 60 percent:

Hearing Sciences
Students are given the opportunity to prepare for application to graduate study in audiology by completing a selection of prerequisite courses; admissions to graduate schools are, however, offered only on a competitive basis. Students who graduate from the Hearing Sciences stream are not yet qualified to evaluate or treat individuals with hearing or vestibular disorders, nor are they qualified in any capacity for work in supervised or unsupervised provision of clinical services. Students with a non-science background may take longer to complete all of the prerequisites for the doctorate in audiology. Prospective students must apply through the Office of the Registrar and are strongly advised to consult the department's Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences Co-ordinator before registering for any LING courses.

The certificate is awarded upon completion of the following courses with an overall average of 70 percent:

The Study of Language
Readings and discussion regarding language study past and present, including the study of language and its relation to thought; form, meaning, and use of language as examined variously from one time and place to another; role of language study in the discussion of a range of social phenomena and issues.

Introduction to Language and Communication Disorders
Various contemporary theories of normal and abnormal language acquisition and learning. Topics include neurological, psychological, cultural and pathological factors. Attention to the development of strong academic reading and writing abilities.

Note: this course is of interest to students in education, behavioural and social sciences, to health professionals and to students intending to pursue subsequent professional training in speech-language pathology or audiology.
