Admissions

I.  Admission Information

The regulations for admission specify minimum requirements only. Possession of the minimum entrance requirement is not a guarantee of admission. The University reserves the right to refuse admission to any candidate.

Non-Discriminatory Policy
Brock has had and will continue to have, a racially non-discriminatory policy and therefore does not discriminate against applicants and students on the basis of race, color or national or ethnic origin. Such a non-discriminatory policy applies to staff and extends to non-discrimination on grounds of creed or sex.

Admission Requirements

1.  Master of Accountancy program
The basic admission requirements for the Master of Accountancy degree are:
·   completion of an honours bachelor's degree with an accounting concentration, or its equivalent, acceptable to Brock University
·   at least a B (second-class honours standing) or equivalent grade point average
In practice a higher average may be required as spaces are limited. Admission average is determined by grades received on the applicant's undergraduate degree.
·   three letters of recommendation attesting to the scholastic record and abilities of the applicant
·   a personal interview may be required
Applicants without sufficient concentration in accounting may require one or more qualifying term(s) before being accepted into the Master of Accountancy program. Such applicants should contact the Accounting and Finance department regarding the courses required. Admission to the qualifying term(s) does not imply automatic admission to the Master of Accountancy program.

2.  Master of Arts and Master of Science programs
The basic admission requirement for the program is an honours bachelor's degree or its equivalent acceptable to Brock University. Ordinarily, at least a B (second-class honours standing) or equivalent grade point average is required.

Applicants with a general or pass degree or an honours degree without sufficient concentration in the subject area, will normally require a qualifying year beyond the general degree before being considered for a graduate program. Such applicants should contact the department concerned regarding the courses required for the qualifying year. Admission to the qualifying year does not imply automatic admission to a master's program.

Applicants with education credentials outside North America will be assessed on an individual basis with respect to degree and standing equivalents.

Individual departments may specify additional requirements and applicants should refer to the information provided by the specific department.

3.  Master of Education Program
The basic admission requirements for the Master of Education degree are:
a)  Completion of one of the following degrees, acceptable to Brock:
·   A four-year undergraduate degree with minimum 75 percent standing
·   a four-year BEd degree with minimum 75 percent standing
·   a BA/BEd, BPhEd/BEd or BSc/BEd degree with minimum 75 percent standing
b)  In practice a higher average may be required as spaces are limited. Admission average is determined by grades received on the applicant's undergraduate degree.
c)  Two letters of recommendation; one attesting to the academic ability of the applicant and the other to professional experience.
d)  Professional experience evidence of at least one year full-time or equivalent successful teaching or other acceptable professional experience in education.
e)  Approved teaching certificate.*
*Candidates with suitable educational experience in a field that does not require teaching certification (e.g., CAAT instructors) may be considered for special admission.

Applicants who do not meet the admissions requirements may be considered for admission upon the completion of a qualifying program approved by the MEd Graduate Admissions committee. Upon receipt of the applicant's request for consideration to a qualifying program, the committee will determine the appropriate qualifying courses. Qualifying courses will not be credited to the MEd degree.

Offers of admission

Assessment of academic background and eligibility to graduate programs is the responsibility of the specific department which will make recommendations for acceptance of applicants to the Graduate Studies Office. The official letter of acceptance will be issued by the Dean of Graduate Studies.

Applicants who are offered admission pending receipt of final transcripts must submit an official copy of the final transcripts to the Graduate Stuties Office before registration in the graduate program is approved.

The University may nullify an admission and revoke registration for admission if it finds that an applicant has in the process provided false or incomplete information.

Admission of international students
International applicants who are considering graduate studies at Brock should not leave for Canada until admission into a graduate program has been confirmed by the Dean of the Faculty concerned. These applicants should have their status cleared with the appropriate immigration authorities and ensure that they have in their possession a Student Authorization Form issued by Canada immigration. Because of the time required to complete the immigration formalities and obtain the necessary documentation, applicants are advised that it may take several months from the time of admission to the receipt of a student visa.

Transfer credits
Degree candidates may be granted transfer credit at the time of admission only for a maximum of one credit (or equivalent) for graduate courses completed at another university that are approved by the Dean. Only graduate courses completed with a grade of B+ or higher within the last five years will be considered for advanced standing. The request for transfer credit must be made at the time of application. Credit will not be granted for courses which have been credited toward another degree or diploma at Brock or another university. Candidates must submit official transcripts, course descriptions and other supporting documentation before consideration will be given to granting transfer credit.

II.  Application Procedures

1. General information
Initial inquiries concerning graduate studies at Brock may be made to the department offering the desired program or to the Graduate Studies Office. Application for admission must be made on the prescribed forms, available from the Graduate Studies Office or the departments. Completed application forms, including a non-refundable application fee of $35.00, payable to Brock University, must accompany the application form. Applications without the fee will not be considered complete.

The following documents are required before admission to a graduate program will be considered. All documents received become the property of the University and will not be returned.
·   Completed application forms, with the $35.00 application fee, should be submitted to Graduate Studies Office.
·   Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate studies to date must be sent directly from the issuing institution to the Graduate Studies Office. Applicants currently taking courses, must arrange to have final standings forwarded as soon as results become available. For all documentation not written in English, a certified English translation is required.
·   Confidential letters of recommendation (on forms supplied by Brock) to support the application should be sent directly by the referees to the Graduate Studies Office. Letters of reference received with the application will not be considered.
·   Applicants whose primary language is not English or who have a degree from a university where the language of instruction was not English, must provide certification of English language proficiency through one of the following:
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), TOEFL CBT (Computer-based Test), MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery), IELTS (International Language Testing Systems), CAEL (Carleton Academic English Language Assessment)

Normally only applicants with minimum scores indicated below will be considered for admission.

International students whose first language is not English may, upon admission to a graduate program, be required to take a remedial course in English.

The responsibility rests with the applicant to ensure that all documents are submitted by the deadline date as indicated on the application guideline from the graduate department.

2.  Application deadline dates

Master of Accountancy
Applications for the MAcc may be submitted at any time of the year. The graduate program commences at the beginning of the Winter Term (January) each year. As noted, however, students may require one or more qualifying terms prior to entry into the graduate program in the Winter Term. Consequently, applications should be received by March 1 to ensure adequate time for review of student transcripts. A student may be required to enrol in the Spring and/or Fall Term to obtain the necessary prerequisites.

Applications received subsequent to March 1 will be considered for admission for entry into the graduate program in the following Winter Term. Students who do not require one or more qualifying terms will be accepted directly into the graduate program. However, in any case, the application must be received by September 15 to be considered for admission for the following Winter Term. Applicants will be notified of their admission status approximately one month from the application due date.

Master of Arts, Master of Science and Doctoral Programs
Applications for MA, MSc and PhD candidates may be submitted at any time of the year, however, some departments have firm application deadlines and applicants should contact the specific graduate program of interest for further information on deadline dates. Departments normally admit students to commence studies in the Fall Term. However, some academic departments may consider applicants to commence studies in the Winter or Spring terms. Applicants should contact the department concerned to determine the possible entry dates.

Applications for admission from outside Canada should be completed at least six months before the desired date of admission in order for students to make the necessary visa arrangements.

Master of Education
Applications for MEd admission must be completed by April 15 for Fall admission. Applicants will be notified of their admission status approximately one month from the application due date.

Doctoral Studies in Education
PhD program offered jointly by Brock, Lakehead University, University of Waterloo and the University of Windsor. Applications are due February 15, 2001.
