Business Economics, Brock University (Class of 2023)

PhD student,
University of Toronto

Transferring to Brock in the fall of 2019, my time in the Business Economics program was truly transformative.

From the outset, the university’s exceptional quality stood out, but it was the warm and inclusive community that truly set Brock apart. The atmosphere of acceptance made forging connections effortless, fostering a sense of belonging from day one.

The faculty played a pivotal role in my growth, with their dedication and personable approach creating an environment conducive to both learning and personal development. Their guidance not only propelled me academically but also motivated me to be the best version of myself. I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that, had it not been for them, I would not be on the path I am today.

Yet, it is the relationships I formed with my peers and mentors that have left an indelible mark on my heart. The camaraderie shared and connections forged have enriched my experience immeasurably and are something I will cherish for the rest of my life.

Looking back, my decision to transfer to Brock was one of the most rewarding choices I’ve made. I’m profoundly grateful for the transformative journey it offered, and as I look to the future, I carry with me not only knowledge and skills but also enduring connections and cherished memories.

BA Economics, Brock University (Class of 2022) and MBE (2023)

Law Student,
University of Aberdeen,
Scotland, United Kingdom

My time in the MBE program at Brock gave me the opportunity to build my knowledge of economics and hone my hands-on skills in a very personalised learning experience with my peers and professors.

I was able to further advance my understanding the economic principles learned in my undergraduate degree and take these to the next level in applying them to real world problems across a range of topics under the guidance of a very intelligent and helpful stable of faculty members. My time in the program prepared me for my future beyond my education and set me up for a wide range in what I can pursue wherever my future career path may take me.

As a student athlete at Brock the hard work required to perform in my sport and excel in the academic nature of the program hand-in-hand seemed daunting, but the professors in the program took great interest in my pursuits beyond economics and were more than helpful in ensuring I was able to succeed in my sport and in my course work.

The opportunity to complete the Major Research Paper was one of a kind and allowed me to truly further and display my research and apply them to something I could be proud of under the exceptional guidance of my supervising professors. There is truly not enough that can be said about the effect this program had on me in preparing me for the future!

MBE (2022)

Senior Associate,
Economic Advisory at Deloitte

The Master of Business Economics (MBE) program at Brock University afforded me the opportunity to develop and apply my skillset in a variety of professional settings.

What elevated my experience was undertaking a co-op with the federal government. This experience kickstarted my career, eventually landing me the position I have today. The MBE program is set up to provide prospective students with the dynamic skillset necessary to find meaningful opportunities in the economic workplace.

MBE (2022)

Senior Risk Analyst,
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC)

As an International graduate student at Brock University, my journey through the Master of Business Economics Co-op (MBE) program was nothing short of transformative.

This experience not only improved my academic abilities but also allowed me to merge theory with practice through a structured co-op program, ultimately paving the way for my current professional role as a Senior Risk Analyst at the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

My co-op placement with Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), where I specialised in Operational Risk Management (ORM), marked a pivotal moment in my academic and professional growth. It provided a space to cultivate professional relationships and enhance my networking skills, which have proven invaluable in my career. The knowledge acquired during my time at Brock and the hands-on experience at BDC were very instrumental in securing my current role at CMHC.

Opting for the MBE program at Brock University has been one of the most important decisions in my life. I am immensely grateful to the MBE faculty and the Co-op team for their support and guidance.

The Masters of Business Economics program at Brock University was the most valuable experience of my academic and professional career.

MBE (2021)

Analyst,
Statistics Canada

I originally decided to stay at Brock after completing my undergraduate studies because I felt that the MBE program was a blend of business and economics fundamentals that was hard to find elsewhere. Co-op also being offered made the decision obvious for me.

My experience in the program was rewarding; while difficult, I was learning how to review methodology in literature, conduct statistical tests in software like R, and everything in between. My MRP and blended background in both research and application from Brock meant I was able to perform at a level that secured me a full time offer upon graduating while on co-op. My shift from being a student to an Economist with one foot in data science was smooth thanks to the foundation built during my studies. I’m grateful for my experience at Brock and thankful for the talent and dedication in Brock’s Economics and Co-op departments.

MBE (2020)

Data Scientist,
Assurance IQ

The Master of Business and Economics (MBE) program provides a comprehensive learning experience that is transferable to many careers.

It is rigorous in mathematics and statistics but also incorporates business courses and research. During my experience as a Data Scientist, the competencies I developed during the program have proven very valuable to employers. Advancing my skills in areas such as programming and grasping the nuances of various machine learning algorithms was made significantly smoother by what I learned. This, alongside strong business acumen, has allowed me to understand and solve complex business challenges from a highly technical approach.

I recommend this program to anyone who is looking for something that can open up doors to many different career paths!

MBE (2020)

Financial Planning Consultant,
EVERPRO Insurance Brokers Co., Ltd

I decided to do a Master’s in Business Economics to follow my first degree in Economics, Accounting and Finance. I loved everything about my experience – it gave me many opportunities to improve my skills and broaden my knowledge.

The Funding Package also meant a lot to me. Without it, I had to take a job to cover my living costs and some of course fees, but having these funds meant that I could focus my time and energy on my studies.

After graduating from my programme, I went back to Beijing, working as an independent financial consultant. The diversity of my client base, the markets I cover, and the nature of projects I lead mean that I need to be prepared for all sorts of surprises every day, be prepared to learn new things and to cope with unexpected situations by applying skills learnt from academic courses and life. A massive thank you to professors for the academic support they gave me and to many other staff at Brock especially those from the Department of Economics.

MBE (2017)

Postdoctoral research associate,
Dept. of Epidemiology and Biostatistics,
Western University

The Master of Business Economics (MBE) program at Brock University served as a pivotal step in my academic journey, leading to profound career advancements.

The comprehensive curriculum and the expert guidance of Prof. Ogwang and Prof. Lamarche were instrumental in shaping my understanding of complex economic theories and practical applications. Their support was invaluable as I navigated through the challenges of obtaining my CFA charter and completing a PhD in Economics at McMaster University.

Serving as a teaching assistant across various economics courses at Brock, I enriched my teaching skills, culminating in the honour of receiving the International Teaching Assistant Award.

As I embark on post-doctoral research at Western University, I attribute my preparedness and success to the solid foundation built during my MBE years. The program not only imparted knowledge but also fostered an environment of growth and excellence that continues to inspire my work.
