Rate of pay: $15/hour

Weekly Hours: 35 hours/week


Job Description & Duties

The Residence Facilities Summer Desk Assistant will be a part of the Residence Facilities Team [which includes the Service Desks], learning the operations of the 24/7 Service Desk and the day-to-day, as well as, the short- and long-term planning functions required to maintain our seven student residences.

Under the direction of the Residence Facilities Management Team, the residence facilities summer desk assistant DUTIES include:

  • Work a variety of shifts on the front line of the 24-hour Service Desk, providing service to the students living in residence for the summer term and the conference guests who are staying in residence at various points during the summer season
  • Provide general information about residence and the Brock campus, as well as, services in the community
  • Provide assistance to students, summer guests and/or summer staff/contractors in regards to residence inquiries, maintenance concerns, key/equipment sign out, and emergency situations [ need for an emergency response from Security or 911 issues (ambulance/fire) AND/OR after hours call in work to deal with maintenance concerns]
  • Participate in unit-by-unit building inspections and inventory checks at end of term
  • Assist in compiling residence year-end damage billings
  • Create/update an asset database of residence equipment and furnishings
  • Research and develop resources that support residence-based educational programming initiatives relating to the residence facilities; for example, energy reduction promotions, recycling program
  • Assist in the organization and co-ordination of Residence Move-In Day
  • Review, provide feedback, and assist in editing various residence publications/brochures/documents and the Service Desk procedures manual
  • Aid in performing checks of safety and security equipment, such as card swipe units, battery-operated detectors, and fire safety equipment
  • Assist in organizing, archiving, and storing files and resources
  • Participate in unit-by-unit building and inventory checks at end of summer to ensure units/rooms are ready for the arrival of students for Fall term.


  • Currently enrolled as a Brock student; preference will be given to those with Service Desk and/or residence experience
  • Must be able/available to work shift work, including evenings, nights, overnights, weekends, and holidays
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Resourceful; skilled in researching; proficient computer user
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Highly organized and attentive to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of Brock University residences, Service Desks, and their facilities is an asset
  • Background and/or experience in maintenance or custodial work is an asset
