We asked a few of our 2020-21 Head Residents why they enjoy being part of the Department of Residences team.
Cassandra Schultz – Head Resident in Village: I enjoy being a Head Resident because it allows me to do what I love most, which is to support students. After being a don for two years, being a Head Resident meant that I was still able to support students directly AND indirectly by supporting their dons. It means the world to me to be able to work with others who are just as passionate about topics like mental health and social justice as I am and to have a space where we can be a part of meaningful change. Being a Head Resident in a time of COVID-19 has allowed me to re-imagine everything I thought I knew about leadership and what human connection truly means. There have been so many new opportunities for creativity and innovation. The students and staff living in residence this year chose to come to residence in a pandemic for a reason. My goal this year has been to find out what that reason is and to provide them with a residence experience that is the highlight of their time at Brock.
Sydney Hayward – Head Resident in Quarry View: Being a Head Resident has provided me with an amazing leadership opportunity. I have developed amazing conflict management/team building skills. I have had the opportunity to work closely with professional staff members and develop friendships that will last a life time. My favourite thing about being a Head Resident is being a role model for my staff team, and helping them to become the best dons and people possible!
Jenna Freeland – Head Resident in Village: COVID-19 changed everything we’ve done, and has created unlimited opportunities for growth in this position. Watching my team grow has helped me grow, because I know that I had a part in making that happen. Being on Residence Life Staff has given me the confidence to take on new challenges in my future professional career choices.
