Applied Linguistics – Direct Entry (MA)

Teaching English as a subsequent language is a complex process. This MA program is designed to integrate important elements of this process in an educational experience promoting a high level of expertise and professionalism. There are two program options: a 12 month direct entry option and a unique 14 month bridged entry option with summer bridging component and academic writing mentorship throughout the academic year.

Admission requirements

  1. Check the university requirements and the program requirements.
  2. Complete the online application and submit the non-refundable application fee.
  3. You will need to submit your transcripts as well as the following program-specific materials:

12 Month Intensive Program (for applicants with an academic background in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics and/or TESL/TESOL/TEFL)

  • Three references are required.
  • Curriculum Vitae/Resume: This should include the applicant’s education, employment, publications, teaching and research activities, and other professional experience (e.g., relevant volunteer experience).
  • A Statement of Intent: ­a one or two page statement outlining the applicant’s objectives in undertaking graduate studies in Applied Linguistics, the applicant’s academic preparedness for the program, and the applicant’s focus of study in the program
  • English Language Proficiency Requirement (if applicant’s first language is not English): TOEFL 630 PBT/109 IBT, TWE 5.5 and TSE 55 or IELTS 8 and writing band 8 (no individual score under 7.5).*
  • Applicants may also be required to submit a writing sample

2 Year Direct Entry Program (for applicants without an academic background in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics and/or TESL/TESOL/TEFL)

Applicants without an academic background in the discipline may apply and be considered for admission to the MA program, conditional on satisfactory completion of Brock University’s Certificate in TESL (CTESL) program during the first year of study. Acquiring a CTESL is itself a necessary qualification to teach in many immigrant English language teaching programs in Ontario.

  • Three references are required.
  • Curriculum Vitae/Resume: This should include the applicant’s education, employment, publications, teaching and research activities, and other professional experience (e.g., relevant volunteer experience).
  • A Statement of Intent: ­a one or two page statement outlining the applicant’s objectives in undertaking graduate studies in Applied Linguistics, the applicant’s academic preparedness for the program, and the applicant’s focus of study in the program. Please explicitly indicate your interest in the two year program option if you lack a background in the discipline.
  • English Language Proficiency Requirement (if applicant’s first language is not English): TOEFL 630 PBT/109 IBT, TWE 5.5 and TSE 55 or IELTS 8 and writing band 8 (no individual score under 7.5).*
  • Applicants may also be required to submit a writing sample.

*DALS does not grant language waivers to applicants from other countries but requires them to submit the language score they achieved on one of the language tests listed above.
