Applied Linguistics – Bridged Entry (MA)

Teaching English as a subsequent language is a complex process. This MA program is designed to integrate important elements of this process in an educational experience promoting a high level of expertise and professionalism. There are two program options: a 12 month direct entry option and a unique 14 month bridged entry option with summer bridging component and academic writing mentorship throughout the academic year.

Admission requirements

  2. Complete the online application and submit the non-refundable application fee.
  3. You will need to submit your transcripts as well as the following program-specific materials:

Bridged entry (14 month program for applicants with an academic background in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics and/or TESL/TESOL/TEFL):

  • Two references are required.
  • Cover letter submitted by the applicant or agency (if applicable)
  • A Statement of Intent: ­a one or two page statement outlining the applicant’s objectives in undertaking graduate studies in Applied Linguistics, the applicant’s academic preparedness for the program, and the applicant’s focus of study in the program
  • Curriculum Vitae/Resume: This should indicate the applicant’s education, employment, publication, teaching and research activities, and other professional experience.
  • English Language Proficiency scores for Bridged entry route: TOEFL PBT 550, TOEFL CBT 213, TOEFL iBT 80, IELTS 6.5 and writing band 6.5 (no score under 5.5)
  • Applicants may also be required to submit a writing sample.

2 Year Bridged Entry Program (for applicants without an academic background in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics and/or TESL/TESOL/TEFL)

Applicants without an academic background in the discipline may apply and be considered for admission to the MA program, conditional on satisfactory completion of Brock University’s Certificate in TESL (CTESL) program during the first year of study.

  • Two references are required.
  • Cover letter submitted by the applicant or agency (if applicable)
  • A Statement of Intent: ­a one or two page statement outlining the applicant’s objectives in undertaking graduate studies in Applied Linguistics, the applicant’s academic preparedness for the program, and the applicant’s focus of study in the program. Please explicitly indicate your interest in the two year program option if you lack a background in the discipline.
  • Curriculum Vitae/Resume: This should indicate the applicant’s education, employment, publication, teaching and research activities, and other professional experience.
  • English Language Proficiency scores for Bridged entry route: TOEFL PBT 550, TOEFL CBT 213, TOEFL iBT 80, IELTS 6.5 and writing band 6.5 (no score under 5.5)
  • Applicants may also be required to submit a writing sample.

*Language of instruction waivers are not accepted for the MA Applied Linguistics (TESL) program.
