Synchronous Video

To deliver content, hold office hours, or host meetings in a live (synchronous) format, Brock supports the use of the following video conferencing tools.

Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams is a tool that can support up to 300 concurrent users per meeting and can be used in your teaching to create discussion spaces, encourage collaboration and student engagement, develop teamwork, and work collectively towards a common learning outcome. It allows for synchronous moments (lectures, meetings, office hours), student collaboration, and interactivity. It is not for assignment submission, testing, grade calculations, and other linear, transactional and structured content (see Isaak/Sakai for more on this).

Microsoft Teams is a computer platform available as both an application that can be downloaded to a computer or a mobile device, as well as a web application. Note that it is a recommended course of action to download the computer application as there are a more robust set of features and options available. Everyone with a BrockU account can access and download Teams.

Any Teams meeting or call can be recorded to capture audio, video, and screen sharing activity. All recordings are saved to MS Stream.

It is important to note that the default Teams Meeting Options are set to allow all attendees to present. This means that people outside the class can be invited to the meeting by any member of the meeting. This can lead to unwelcome (and potentially disruptive) participants joining the meeting. It is important to note that eliminating all possibilities of unwelcome participants is not part of the technical capabilities of Teams, but you can minimize the risk by being aware of the Roles in a meeting, changing a participant’s role, muting, or removing them from the call.

LifeSize

LifeSize is a video conferencing tool that can be used for one-on-one meetings (in your own meeting room with a personalized link for sharing), office hours, or large online lecture delivery. We recommend LifeSize as the top choice for large groups between 300 to 1000 users per meeting.

LifeSize is a computer platform available as both an application that can be downloaded to a computer as well as a web application. Everyone with a BrockU account can access and download LifeSize. Any LifeSize call can be recorded to capture audio, video, and screen sharing activity. All recordings are saved to My Recordings in the LifeSize Recordings Feed.

Teams Live Events

Microsoft Teams Live Events is a platform for offering synchronous sessions to very large groups, greater than 1000 users. It can support multiple video and audio streams as well as chat and interactive functionality. Typically, members of the teaching team other than the instructor (ie. course coordinator or TAs) will be required to help run and moderate a live event. If you’re interested in hosting an MS Teams Live Event we ask that you reach out to CPI (see link below) well in advance of the event date in order for us to work through the logistics with you.
