  • Omni: the power of collaboration

Thanks to the Library’s partnership in Omni, Brock students, faculty, and staff have access to over 25.3 million books from 18 universities in Ontario.

Fanny Dolansky, Brock professor in the Department of Classics and Archaeology, shared “I really couldn’t do my research or teaching without the support of the library and having more access to print (as well as digital) resources and efficient, reliable access, makes a huge difference! Omni and other changes at the library have revolutionized student and faculty research.”

Over the past twelve months, Brock researchers used Omni to borrow approximately 2,000 books! In the same period, Brock Library loaned out over 1,700 books to researchers at other Omni institutions.

To request an item in Omni, login to your library account and perform a search. Omni searches across all 18 partners for that item and when it finds an available copy, you’ll be able to place a request. You can request to pick up the book at Brock or your choice of partner library. You will be notified when your book is ready for pickup and you will enjoy the same 120-day loan period.

Search Omni to find resources that support your coursework, as well as featured collections on a variety of themes.

  • Omni feedback form remains available

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Omni Feedback Survey! Participants had the option to enter a draw for a $50 Amazon gift card.  The contest closed Friday April 30th at noon and one lucky winner was randomly selected.  Congratulations to Cedric Junor, a 2nd year film studies student!

Feedback from the survey will help us learn how Omni has been helpful in your research journey as well as identify areas that could be improved.  As Omni is a consortia search tool with 15 other universities in Ontario, the anonymous feedback we received will contribute to the overall experience for all schools. Although the contest has closed, the survey still remains available to anyone else in the Brock community who would like to share their feedback.  We always appreciate learning from our users.

  • Featured Collection: Anti-Black Racism and White Privilege

We are in the midst of a civil rights uprising.

As Brock’s Director of Human Rights and Equity, Leela Madhava Rau notes, “Systemic racism, and specifically anti-Black racism, is being named as a root cause of inequities with which people have been living for centuries… People are in the streets demanding nothing less than total change: not only the ability to live their lives without the ever-present threat of violence, but the opportunity for everyone, regardless of identity, to participate fully and equitably in societal structures.”

Many are stating the desire to learn, listen, read, and reflect. To that end, we are highlighting a selection of books, ebooks, and streaming videos on the topic of ‘Anti-Black Racism and White Privilege’. While our print collection remains inaccessible at this time, we encourage you to seek out local booksellers and public libraries.

  • Making the move from print to digital book displays

Something we miss about being on-site is the opportunity to bring you monthly thematic book displays. We enjoy the creative outlet of curating them and, as the books fly off the shelves, we know you are reading our selections.

Now that we are working at home, we’ve come up with a new plan to bring you virtual displays of e-book titles that you can read right now.

Each month, we’ll share a link in our social media channels to a featured collection within Omni. First up for May, a collection of titles related to Food. It’s an eclectic grouping of titles around the business, chemistry, history, culture and psychology of food as well as food activism.

We hope you look forward to each new collection and, find a title or two that pique your interest.
