Find permitted uses for library resources

The Brock University Library subscribes to many electronic resources including e-journals, e-books and databases. Below is a guide on how to find permitted uses for electronic resources that are part of the library’s subscriptions.

Find permitted uses for e-journal articles

1. Go to Brock Library’s Journal Search, available on the Library’s homepage, under Search.

2. Search for the title of the journal you wish to use, and hit enter. A list of results will display. Select the journal title that you need by clicking on the journal title.

3. The record will open for that journal. Scroll down to see full-text availability. Below the full text link are Permitted Uses (shown highlighted below). Click on the Permitted Uses link.

4. License terms are listed. For instance, if the Course Management System permission is ‘yes’, you can post an article in Brightspace. If it is ‘no’, but you see a ‘yes’ to linking, you can link to the work instead. For tips on how to create stable (“persistent”) links, visit Create Persistent Links or contact Reserves at reserve@brocku.ca. If there are no permitted uses for the article you need, please contact liblicense@brocku.ca for permissions.

Find permitted uses for e-books

1. Go to Brock Library’s Omni Advanced Search, available on the Library’s homepage.

2. Search for the title of the book you wish to use, and hit enter. A list of results will display. Select the book title that you need.

3. The record will open for that e-book. Scroll down to see full-text availability. Below the full text link are Permitted Uses (shown highlighted below). Right click on the Permitted Uses link and select ‘Open link in new tab’.

4. License terms are listed. For example, if the Course Management System permission is ‘yes’, you can post a chapter in Brightspace. If it is ‘no’, but you see a ‘yes’ to linking, you can link to the work instead. Find permitted uses for databases

1. Go to Brock Library’s Database search available on the library homepage, under Search.

2. Search for the title of the database you wish to use, and hit enter or click the ‘Go’ button. A list of results will display. Alternatively, click on the first letter of the title of the database you are searching for. In the example below, for the database ARTstor Digital Library, either type in that name in the search box on the right and hit enter, or click on ‘A’ in the A-Z list, and then find ARTstor Digital Library in the list of databases starting with ‘A’.

3. The record will open for that database. Scroll down to see full-text availability. At the bottom of the record for the database will be a ‘Permitted Uses’ link (highlighted below). Click on the Permitted Uses link.

4. License terms are listed. For the example below, if the text mining permission is ‘Ask’, you can contact the library to find out text mining permissions for ARTstor. If there are no permitted uses for the database you need, please contact liblicense@brocku.ca for permissions.
