International Student-Athletes

Brock University prides itself on the success of its student-athletes. Across 24 varsity teams, the Brock Badgers have claimed 80 provincial championships and 40 national titles.

Our Badgers are also becoming recognized for their success off the field of play, becoming leaders who are actively engaged in building a stronger community.

Ana Caldeira Rua
Basketball

Ana was drawn to Brock because of the proximity to her fathers business. She started playing basketball in Portugal when she was eleven years old and came to Brock to play at a challenging, university level. Ana is also an International Student Ambassador, where she represents the international community on campus and shares her passion for Brock with prospective students.

Emmanuel Harawa
Track and Field

As a member of the Track and Field team, Emmanuel competes in both the long and high jump. When he was younger, he had a love for all sports but found that he was particularly good at running. Emmanuel feels fortunate for the opportunities that Brock has provided him and loves studying in Canada.

Hannah Davenhill

Hannah began playing volleyball in middle school and started playing competitively by the time she reached high school. When she was in tenth grade she made the Under 17 New Zealand national team team and then made the Under 19 national team in the following two years. Hannah was drawn to Brock because New Zealand does not have university sports and her old club coach was a Canadian and knew the Brock volleyball coach. Hannah loves Brock for the academics, athletics and friendships it has provided.

Kelsey Larkin

Kelsey got into wrestling as a result of fighting with her older sister growing up. She has had a passion for the sport ever since. She heard about Brock from her former university wrestling coach who knew Marty Calder, the current head coach of Brock’s wrestling team. Brock particularly stood out to her because it had the program she wanted, while also having an outstanding wrestling team. Kelsey enjoys how much Brock student’s respect women’s wrestling, and feels that it is not as appreciated at U.S. schools. Kelsey feels very fortunate to compete in a sport she loves while receiving the quality education she needs to get into medical school.

Lydia Collas

Lydia completed her undergraduate degree in England but came to Brock because of a scholarship that’s awarded to students from her home country. The island of Guernsey is the birthplace of the university’s namesake, Sir Major General Isaac Brock. Each year, students from Guernsey have the opportunity to receive a full academic scholarship to attend Brock University. Lydia started riding Equestrian when she was seven years old and even had her own horse until she was eighteen and had to leave for university.

Marcello Correa

Marcello, who is the captain of the men’s volleyball team, started playing volleyball when he was 9 years old and has played competitively for the past eleven years. Marcelo found out about Brock through an alumni and was intrigued by the academic opportunities it afforded. He is also is a big part of the recreational men’s volleyball team, which began last year. Marcelo is also an International Student Ambassador, where he represents the international community on campus and shares his passion for Brock with prospective students.

Matt Kowald

Mat was first exposed to wrestling when he was 15 years old practicing jiu-jitsu at a local club. He went on to attend Curtin University where he studied exercise sport and rehabilitation science before his journey to Brock in 2015. Matt came to Brock because of its renowned wrestling program in the hopes competing at a higher level of competition. After graduation, he plans on staying in Canada to pursue his goal of becoming an Olympian.

Mizam Tamaradze

Mizam was drawn to Brock for the opportunity to wrestle at a high level, while studying at the same time. He was introduced to wrestling in the 6th grade after one of his middle school teachers convinced him that he would be good at it. He first began his college athletic career at Springfield Technical College where he completed two years of school while wrestling. While at a tournament he came across Marty Calder, the head coach of the Brock wrestling team, who discussed the opportunities Brock had to offer. Mizam realized that the focus on freestyle wrestling in Canada would benefit his future goals of making a world team and possibly going to the Olympics, so he joined Brock. At first, Mizam was worried about the different cultures of his teammates, but he fell in love with the school and now refers to his teammates and coaches as “family.”

Peter Schnabel

Peter began playing volleyball when he was in the six grade and played on a club team prior to his arrival to Brock. He has played on many national teams and even competed in the junior worlds from 2012 to 2015. Peter was attracted to Brock because of the scholarships it provided and the high level of play he’s able to compete in. Peter enjoys the professors, facilities and atmosphere of Brock and is very proud to be a Badger.

Skylar Grote

Skylar found out about Brock through her father, who suggested that she should look at school’s in Canada. After a trip to Brock in January of 2017, Skylar knew that the opportunities at Brock, both academically and athletically, were too good to pass up. She began school in September of 2017 and claims coming to Brock was the best decision she has ever made. She was hesitant about leaving the comfort of home initially, but she – like so many other international students – has found a home within the Brock community. Skylar is also an International Student Ambassador, where she represents the international community on campus and shares her passion for Brock with prospective students.

Zach Whitely

When Zach was younger he came across a picture of his Dad rowing and asked his Dad what he was doing. His Dad replied that “he would tell him but it would be easier to try it” and that is how Zach’s career began. Zach rowed throughout high school and realized that he wanted to continue it on a college level. While competing in a race in Canada, his coach came across a Brock University stand and brought it to Zach’s attention. Zach quickly contacted the coach and looked into the programs in more detail. Zach came to Brock because of the available scholarships, experienced coaches, and academic opportunities the school provides.
