Applications are now open for the organizing committee for the annual Graduate Student Symposium to be held at Brock on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024.
All committee positions offer the opportunity for graduate students to explore and gain experience with Brock University’s Core Competencies (apply knowledge, think critically, act innovatively, communicate effectively, know yourself, collaborate effectively, be curious, engage with your community, practice intercultural fluency, and Surgite!)
All positions have an average of 2-3 hours per week time commitment (meetings, independent work, etc) from October 2023 – February 2024, plus attendance at the symposium in February.
Positions are available to MA and PhD students, as well as keen fourth year undergraduate students.
Interested students should email a 1-2 page letter explaining their suitability for the role and including the name of one faculty reference to Dr. Elizabeth Vlossak, Associate Dean–Research and Graduate Studies by 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29, 2023. (Please note that written references are not required.) Applications will be assessed by the Humanities Research Institute and candidates will be contacted by Fall Reading Week.
The Facilities and Campus Partner Coordinator is responsible for coordinating with all Brock University facilities, including catering, room booking services, custodial, IT/AV, etc. They will also coordinate with campus partners such as student clubs, Career and Experiential Education, etc.

The Marketing and Promotion Coordinator is responsible for advertising for the event. This will include advertising for student paper submissions and for general attendance. They manage the design of posters, digital adverts, and the event program. They will coordinate with Brock social media pages (Faculty of Humanities, individual program social medias, etc) to promote the event. They will also organize in-person and classroom recruitment for the event.
This position is ideal for a graduate student in any year of their program.
This position may be supported by a fourth-year student Marketing and Promotion Assistant.

The Communications Coordinator is the primary point of contact for all event presenters. They are responsible for monitoring the event email and responding to inquiries. They will lead the adjudicating committee for submission selection and organize and support event presenters.

This position is ideal for a graduate student in any year of their program.
This position may be supported by a fourth-year student Communications Assistant.
The Administrative Coordinator is responsible for organizing committee meetings by preparing the agenda, taking minutes, and keeping a record of all administrative tasks for the team.
This position is ideal for a grad student in the first year of a two-year program.

The Lead Coordinator is responsible for overseeing and coordinating team members’ tasks for the event. They will liaise with the Faculty of Humanities Strategic Initiatives and Outreach Officer, Brock Deans, VPs, and event guests. They will be responsible for event funding applications and budgeting and will chair committee meetings.

Fourth-year Undergraduate positions are ideal for students interested in pursuing graduate studies in the Humanities at Brock or other institutions. These positions require less time commitment (approximately 1-hour biweekly, plus attendance at the Symposium) and provide an opportunity to explore the graduate student community and make connections in the Faculty of Humanities at Brock.
The Marketing and Promotion Assistant will support the Marketing and Promotion Coordinator with their responsibilities.
The Communications Assistant will support the Communications Coordinator with their responsibilities.
