HIST 3M60: Field School in Local Historical Archaeology

Description

This course provides practical experience in historical archaeology field methods, including but not limited to site survey, excavation, recording, and laboratory procedures. Fieldwork will be complemented by lectures, workshops and a field trip, offering additional instruction on material culture, historic landscapes, and archival sources.  Our field school will focus on archaeological study of an important Great Lakes shipyard, occupied between 1827 and 1901.

Location

The field site/shipyard is located in downtown St. Catharines.  We will also be using lab space and lecture rooms at Brock University.  Our field trip will be based within St. Catharines, for which students will be encouraged to carpool.

Credit and Schedule

HIST 3M60 is a 5-week intensive, full-credit course, which runs Monday through Friday, approximately 9-5.  Work will continue regardless of the weather, except on extreme weather days when students will be processing finds at the lab.  The course will also involve one weekend (Sat-Sun), to introduce students to public archaeology during our site open-days.

Course Fees

Students are responsible for

  • Personal medical expenses (and proof of tetanus or booster)
  • Personal insurance
  • Personal equipment (a list of required and suggested items will be provided)
