FOE Research Office

The FOE Research Office supports a rich scholarly community within the Faculty of Education by identifying funding opportunities, reviewing research grant applications, supporting research grants and knowledge mobilization activities, offering research education programs, overseeing research administration and budgeting, and advancing research leadership in the faculty and at the university.

The FOE Research Office is devoted to promoting collaboration and partnerships among faculty members and external researchers, and updating faculty members with research opportunities, policies and procedures. The Office reports to the Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Studies and to the department. The office also provides support for graduate students in their development of research capacity by facilitating various research skills workshops and promoting research assistantships.

Financial support for research includes the Graduate Research Assistant Development (GRAD) fund, the Research and Development (R & D) fund, the Discretionary Strategic Initiatives Fund (DSIF), and Faculty of Education graduate student conference support.

The FOE Graduate Research Assistant Development (GRAD) Fund supports Faculty of Education graduate students in their development of research skills. Faculty members may apply for one 60-hour GRAD Fund student contract per year and for the present term. Priority will be given to full-time, research-based students. Full-time, course-based, and part-time students (research or course-based) may be hired if no full-time, research-based students are available. Faculty must provide guidance and training to students as required. For more information, please contact the Office of the Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Studies at adofoe@brocku.ca.

Please send an electronic copy of the completed application to the Office of the Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Studies at adofoe@brocku.ca.

Alternatively, students can access the Student RA Expression of Interest Database, and enter in their details directly at https://secure3.ed.brocku.ca/research/index.php  Faculty members are then able to review students’ profiles and contact qualified individuals for their research projects. As the database is cleaned annually, it is advisable for students to complete their profiles annually, prior to the beginning of the fall term.

Faculty members can apply for a Research and Development grant every two years to initiate research, undertake a pilot project, extend ongoing research, or support knowledge mobilization. Depending on the project, students may be employed in a research capacity on the R & D grant. The funds are limited, and are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. As soon as students know they will be participating as a presenter at a conference, it is advisable to complete the conference pre-approval section of the form, and submit to adofoe@brocku.ca so that the Office of the Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Studies can determine whether funds are available to support students’ conference participation. Confirmation of available funds will be provided via email. Once students participate in the conference, they need to complete the application form and attach all corroborating documentation for the expenses incurred. For more information, please contact the Office of the Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Studies at adofoe@brocku.ca.
