The Smiths planned out their day at Metrotown upon arrival. Mrs. Smith needed to visit the bank and Mr. Smith wanted to do some grocery shopping. The kids would get their wishes and be able to eat, play, shop, walk, and watch! While Mr. and Mrs. Smith went there own ways, the kids ran to the large mall directory. Melanie and Sara made their way around the mall bargain hunting for clothes while Marcus and Susie ventured off to look at different items.

Metrotown Mall is split up into two sections – Metropolis at Metrotown and Metrotown Centre.  It has a wide variety of shops and businesses. As you have calculated before, you know that the mall is extremely big and covers a large area (the largest in British Columbia).  To find the stores you want to shop at, you go to the Mall Directory to view the list of businesses.

Access the mall directory by visiting the website:

1)     Melanie and Sara wanted to make the most of their time at Metrotown. They wanted to see what kinds of stores were at the mall.  They wanted to find out where their favorite stores were located – either at Metropolis or Metrotown Centre.  Count the number of stores found in each of the following categories.

2)     Melanie and Sara really wanted to go look at clothes.  They wanted all the latest new fashions.  If they want to go to the side of the mall with the largest number of children’s fashion stores, where should they go?  How many more stores are on this side when compared to the other side of the mall?

They should go to Metropolis at Metrotown as it has 222 stores while there are only 165 at Metrotown Centre.  Taking the difference between those two numbers, there are 57 more stores on the Metropolis side of the Mall.

1)     Using the total number of stores column, calculate the percentage of business in each category. If your percentage totals do not add up to 100%, please explain why it is not the case?  What can you say about the data?  Melanie was curious which category had the most stores, while Sara wanted to find out which category had the least.  Can you tell her which one had the most stores and which had the least? Can you explain why this is the case?

If the percentages do not add up to 100%, it may be due to the rounding that takes place.  You may be a bit off due to rounding error.  Answers may vary about what you can say about the mall data.  The most stores occur in the Food Services category – where the store size is small, but the selection is large.  The least stores occur in the department stores and mall entertainment categories – where the store size is large, but the selection is small.

2)     Calculate the ratio of Metropolis Stores to Metrotown Centre Stores.

The ratio of Metropolis stores to Metrotown Centre is 222:165, or reduced 74:55

3)     Do the two sides of the mall cater to different people, or do they aim for the same customers based on the stores that are located in the entire mall? Explain.

Answers may vary.  They can comment about how Metrotown Centre has the large department stores while Metropolis seems to have the larger food court.

4)     The kids noticed something particular on the Mall Directory.  Some stores were located in both sections of Metrotown Mall.  What are the names of these stores?

A and W, KFC, Mrs. Vanelli, New York Fries, Orange Julius, Little Monk Pretzel, Eccotique Day Spa, Hallmark, Bell World, Radio Shack, Champs Sports, International Clothiers, Bootlegger

5)     Mr. and Mrs. Smith need to head to Superstore to purchase some grocery items.  From looking at the Mall Directly, the kids determined the shortest way to get to Superstore.  The family has just got off the bus, and has just stepped in the buses entrance of the mall.

Looking at the map below, Mel and Sara determined the SCALE FACTOR used to produce the Mall Directory.  They measured the distance on the map to be 8 centimetres. What is the scale factor for Metropolis?

Note that the distance between the front entrance of Coast Mountain Sports to Chapters is actually 200 metres. This will help you calculate the scale factor.

The scale factor is 8 cm to 200 m or 1 cm to 25 m.  If all units were in centimeters, then the scale factor is 1 cm to 2500 cm.

6)     Since you are at the bus loop, the kids measured the distance on the Mall Directory from the buses entrance to the entrance of Superstore (denoted by 1J) to be 11 centimetres.  Using your scale factor calculated in question #7, determine the distance the parents would need to travel to arrive at the front entrance of Superstore.

11 centimetres * (25 m / 1 cm) = 250 metres.

7)     Little Sara then asked Melanie a profound question.  She asked, “What is the actual length of all the corridors located on the Main Level of Metropolis at Metrotown?”  Can you answer that for her? Melanie then measured the total distance of the corridors and found it to be 23.5 centimetres.

23.5 centimetres * (25 m / 1 cm) = 587.5 metres

8)     The actual distance between Sears and Zellers is 250 metres.  Calculate the SCALE FACTOR used for the Mall Directory detailing Metrotown Centre if the measurement of the corridors on the Mall Directory total 17.3 centimetres.

The scale factor is 17.3 cm to 250 m or 1 cm to 14.45 m.  If all units were in centimeters, then the scale factor is 1 cm to 1445 cm.

9)     The children remembered that their parents wanted to go to the big department stores to look at buying a new bed spread.  They wanted to impress their parents by finding out the Using the scale factor calculated in question #10 and the fact that the mall corridors are 10.4 cm long, determine the distance between the Bay and Zellers.

10.4 centimetres * (14.45 m / 1 cm) = 150.28 metres

Melanie and Sara commented that this math calculation stuff is hard work and all this walking that they do takes a lot of energy.  Sara noticed that when they walk from the Bay to Zellers, they’ll pass by Metrotown Centre’s new Food Court.  They started to get all excited about lunch time!!!! Mmmmmmmmmm!!!
