The Movie Going Experience

Marcus suggested that the kids treat their parents to a movie.  Too bad neither discount Tuesdays nor cheaper matinee hour exist any longer. Nevertheless, it is wonderful how Famous Films adopted a new pricing policy that Adults pay a flat-rate of $10.95 while seniors and children are charged a new uniform price of $8.95.

1)         If you bought a ticket, how much are you really contributing to the box office sales?

(Remember that taxes like 7% Goods and Services Tax are already included in the price of the ticket)

Every province sets its own tax rate for admission charges for performances and entertainment.  British Columbia charges 0%, meaning nothing extra.  So, of the ticket value, we only have to subtract the 7% GST to get our contribution amount.

For an adult ticket $10.95, we can divide that amount by 1.07 to get the actual movie charge, which is $10.23, and GST is $0.72.  Therefore, of the $10.95 paid, only $10.23 contributed to the box office contest.

For a child ticket $8.95, we can divide that amount by 1.07 to get the actual movie charge, which is $8.36, and GST is $0.59.  Therefore, of the $8.95 paid, only $8.36 contributed to the box office contest.

In Ontario however, that tax rate for performances and entertainment is set at 10%. When added to the 7% GST the total tax rate is 17%. If the tickets are priced the same across the country, contributions per ticket from Ontario is less.

For an adult ticket $10.95, we can divide that amount by 1.17 to get the actual movie charge, which is $9.36, with GST of $0.66 and entertainment tax of $0.93 .  Therefore, of the $10.95 paid, only $9.36 contributed to the box office contest.

For a child ticket $8.95, we can divide that amount by 1.17 to get the actual movie charge, which is $7.65, with GST of $0.54 and entertainment tax of $0.76 .  Therefore, of the $8.95 paid, only $7.65 contributed to the box office contest.

Packages called “Famous Night Out” are available for both adults @ $32.00 and children @ $18.60, which includes

FAMOUS NIGHT OUT - ADULTS
> 2 general admissions
> 2 regular soft drinks
> 1 regular popcorn
FAMOUS NIGHT OUT - CHILD
> 2 child admissions
> 2 small soft drinks
> 1 small popcorn

2)         How much are you paying for the soft drinks and popcorn in each package?  Is there a good deal?

        Adult package:      $32.00 – 2 x $10.95 = $10.10

        Child package:     $18.60 – 2 x $8.95 = $0.70

For an additional 70 cents, it seems like the Child package is a great deal!

Having calculated the astronomical $10.10 extra charged for concessions in the adult package, Marcus looked for the individual items on the menu.

Soft Drinks

Pop Corn

Small

$3.50

$4.00

Regular

$3.75

$4.50

Famous (Large)

$4.00

$5.00

3)         How much are you saving by buying the package instead of the concession and tickets separately?

Adult package:      2 x $10.95 (tickets) + 2 x $3.75 (regular drinks) + $4.50 (regular pop corn) = $33.90

                                        $33.90 – $32.00 = Savings of $1.90

        Child package:     2 x $8.95 (tickets) + 2 x $3.50 (small drinks) + $4.00 (small pop corn) = $28.90

                                        $28.90 - $18.60 = Savings of $10.30

Marcus decided that buying 2 adult tickets and 2 Famous Night Out Children packages is the way to go.

Pop that is offered are:  Lipton Brisk

Susie and Sara love the popcorn from Famous Films as they use Becel margarine and Shake-A-Flavour.

Toppings for the popcorn include ketchup, sour cream and onion, salt and vinegar, white cheddar, all dressed, ranch and dill pickle

4)         How many different ways are there to choose these 2 small popcorns?

Both small popcorns may be of the same flavor.

Thus the 1st popcorn may be of any 1 of 7 flavors and the 2nd popcorn may be of any 1 of the 7 flavors as well.

Together that makes 7 x 7 = 49 ways to choose the 2 small popcorns.

5)         Considering also the soft drinks, from how many different packages are the Smiths choosing?

Again, each soft drink may be of the same flavor since everyone may like Pepsi for example.

Thus the 1st drink may be of any 1 of 7 flavors, the 2nd drink may be of any 1 of the 7 flavors and so on.

Altogether that makes 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 = 2401 ways to choose 4 drinks.

For the entire concession package, we multiply the popcorn and drinks choices to get 117649 different packages.

*** Don’t add them together! ***

Of course, this is only under the assumption that all six people are watching the same movie.

If each person chooses a different movie, we will also have to account for the fact that of so many movies showing in the theatre, they are choosing 1 of n, meaning nC1 or simply n.

Since there are 6 people, we will have to multiply 6n for the movie selection, then multiply by 117649 for the different concession combinations.

The answer will be 6 (people) x n (for the number of movies showing) x 117649 (concession combinations from above) = 705894n

As an entertainment establishment in the business of exhibiting films and providing food and beverage services, and like any business involved in food service, Famous Films prohibit the presence of food products from competitors in our theatres.

Second, they are responsible for any effects of our food products on their guests, and often compensate a guest for pop spilled on their clothes by another guest. The presence of outside food products in their theatres would hinder their ability to regulate incidents of this nature.

Third, outside food may be contained in cans or glass bottles, which pose a safety hazard in a darkened theatre.

Fourth, they do not believe their staff should be placed in a position where they are forced to make biased judgements, based on what food products they feel could be potentially damaging or noxious to other guests.

The exceptions to this policy include special diets, salt-free foods, Kosher foods, and health reasons (e.g. high blood pressure, diabetes).

Since the adults prefer just water, Melanie approached the concession to buy bottled water for her parents.  On the menu, water is priced at $1 each.  Melanie then requested for 2 bottles.  However, the cashier asked for more than just $1 each.

6)         How much exactly did the cashier demand?  Why?

The bottled water sold in the Theatres is 500 ml.

The government considers bottled water under 600 ml to be a single serving, which is subject to GST.

Therefore, 2@$1 = $2 x GST = 2x1.07 = $2.14.

7)         The movie is 101 minutes long.  If the start time is 5:45, when should the Smiths expect to leave for their next event?

5:45 + 101 minutes is …7:26.  Questions like these are calculated in base 60 as there are only 60 minutes per hour.

We should split the 101 minutes into increments of the hour as follows.  15 (makes 6:00) + 60 (makes 7:00) + 26 (makes 7:26).

However, no showing starts right with the movie.  Instead, trailers fill a good 15 minutes or more at the start.

Therefore, a more realistic timing would be approximately 7:45 to 8:00.
