Kenji and Yumi wake up very early today. Their flight is not
until 11:00 PM, but the anticipation of their journey won’t allow
either of them to sit still. While Kenji does most of the packing,
Yumi decides to learn more about the city of Vancouver.
Yumi was especially surprised to learn that the West End of Vancouver
is the second most densely populated urban setting in North America.
It is second only to Manhattan.
Yumi was also surprised to learn that Vancouver was narrowly awarded
the 2010 Olympic bid after beating out Pyeongchang, South Korea
by a margin of only three votes. Vancouver won the second ballot
by a score of 56-53.
Anyways, the time has finally arrived. Kenji and Yumi head off
to the airport.
While aboard the plane, Kenji and Yumi start up conversation with
two travelers sitting on either side of them. Jenny Wong, a math
teacher from Hong Kong, is also traveling to Vancouver to see the
games, and Paul Smith, a US business man, is returning home to Los
Angeles after attending a week long international banking workshop
in Tokyo. Paul is very excited to tell Kenji, Yumi and Jenny all
about his newly acquired knowledge. Our travelers are initially
quite interested to hear Paul’s financial tips, but after two hours
of listening to Paul discuss at great length about the advantages
and disadvantages of foreign investment, Jenny decides it is time
for a little quiet. She decides to present the following problem
to our group of travelers. See if you can also find the solution.
Hooray!! Our travelers have finally arrived in Vancouver. Kenji,
Yumi and Jenny have become good friends after their long journey
together, and so they decide to share a cab ride to their respective
hotels. Kenji and Yumi are also quite thankful to Jenny for her
supply of creative math and logic problems throughout the flight.
It’s amazing how quickly time goes by when you are having fun.
As a way of saying thanks, Kenji and Yumi insist on paying for the
entire taxi fare, but how much will it cost? Complete the following
problem and discover the solution.
After finally arriving at their hotels, Kenji and Yumi are exhausted
and decide to go to bed.
