| Kenji: The
course seems awfully long. In the 2002 Winter Olympics men’s downhill
event in Salt Lake City the course was 3016 m in length with a vertical
drop of 883 m, while the women’s event was 3140 m in length with a
vertical drop of 800 m. I wonder how steep the hill is.
Yumi: Why don’t we try and calculate it! Remember SOH
CAH TOA? We can calculate it easily using the sine ratio.
Kenji: Carole Montillet of France won the women’s downhill
in the 2002 Winter Olympics in a time of 1 minute 39.56 seconds
while Fritz Strobl of Austria won the gold medal for the men in
a time of 1 minute 39.13 seconds.
Yumi: That’s amazing!! I don’t even know if I can even
drive that fast. I wonder what their speed is.
Kenji: Well, since we know that
this should be easy.
