{"id":99930,"date":"2025-03-13T13:54:56","date_gmt":"2025-03-13T17:54:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=99930"},"modified":"2025-03-13T17:04:42","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T21:04:42","slug":"symposium-to-tackle-digital-regulation-questions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/03\/symposium-to-tackle-digital-regulation-questions\/","title":{"rendered":"Symposium to tackle digital regulation questions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From heath tracking apps\u00a0to the ethics of artificial intelligence (AI), digital technology \u2014 and the policies that regulate it \u2014 touch every aspect of life.<\/p>\n<p>During the second annual <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/social-sciences\/symposium-series\/digital-regulation-in-the-public-interest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Digital Regulation in the Public Interest symposium<\/a>, part of the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/social-sciences\/symposium-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social Sciences Symposium Series<\/a>, scholars from Brock and several other Canadian universities will present research exploring:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>educational technology in Canadian post-secondary spaces<\/li>\n<li>generative AI use in communications<\/li>\n<li>online accessibility standards<\/li>\n<li>digital surveillance and health care<\/li>\n<li>AI companions and sex work<\/li>\n<li>accountability for digital health apps<\/li>\n<li>digital tools for migrant support<\/li>\n<li>TikTok\u2019s platform tools<\/li>\n<li>blockchain and the art market<\/li>\n<li>digital citizenship and techno-fascism<\/li>\n<li>the challenges and limitations of digital regulation<\/li>\n<li>data-driven automation and robotics<\/li>\n<li>data regulation and AI<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Associate Professor of Political Science Blayne Haggart says that following on <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/social-sciences\/symposium-series\/digital-regulation-in-the-public-interest\/surveying-the-field\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a successful first event<\/a>, the second symposium will continue to build a community of researchers looking at a highly complex and rapidly evolving field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe digital has been put into every facet of society, and companies end up having a lot of control over our experiences online but also our experiences offline and what happens to our data,\u201d says Haggart. \u201cThe symposium is a way to look at the public policy side of things, considering how to regulate technologies and what principles should guide decision-making \u2014 how do we get these technologies to do what we want them to do and not do what we don\u2019t want them to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Online sessions will wrap up shortly before 5 p.m., at which time everyone is welcome to attend a public reception in Plaza 600F to chat with panelists and meet other students, staff, faculty and community members who are interested in public policy related to technology.<\/p>\n<p>The full program is available to preview on the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/social-sciences\/symposium-series\/digital-regulation-in-the-public-interest\/#1740666136869-c2f78cf6-87a8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">symposium website<\/a>.
