{"id":99792,"date":"2025-03-06T16:30:20","date_gmt":"2025-03-06T21:30:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=99792"},"modified":"2025-03-06T16:42:37","modified_gmt":"2025-03-06T21:42:37","slug":"brock-to-welcome-award-winning-author-tanya-talaga-for-day-of-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/03\/brock-to-welcome-award-winning-author-tanya-talaga-for-day-of-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock to welcome award-winning author Tanya Talaga for day of learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University will welcome critically acclaimed Anishinaabe author and journalist Tanya Talaga to campus later this month for two events that highlight her newest book, <em>The Knowing<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The Hadiya\u2019dag\u00e9nhahs First Nations, M\u00e9tis and Inuit Student Centre \u2014 in collaboration with the Office of Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement and the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences (FAHS) \u2014 will first host Talaga in a <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/290567\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free student-focused event at Brock&#8217;s Residence 8 Atrium<\/a> on Friday, March 21.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/291708\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ticketed community event<\/a> hosted by Associate Professor Robyn Bourgeois, Brock&#8217;s Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement, will follow that evening at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in Thorold.<\/p>\n<p>Talaga\u2019s book documents the decades-long search to locate the gravesite of her great-great grandmother. Circumstances of her life and death were virtually unknown to Talaga\u2019s family, and the author chronicles her work sifting through treaty payments as well as residential school-and-government-correspondence to learn about her family\u2019s matriarch, unravelling larger truths about the colonization of Indigenous people in Canada in the process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough people are starting to learn about the enfranchisement and oppression of Indigenous People throughout Canada\u2019s history \u2014 in residential and day schools, the \u2018Sixties Scoop\u2019 or government-mandated relocations of Inuit families, for example \u2014 they don&#8217;t really know all the details,\u201d said Hadiya\u2019dag\u00e9nhahs Director Cindy Biancaniello. \u201cSome of the stories are shocking to people when they read them for the first time, but it&#8217;s a book you read with your eyes wide open that is hard to put down.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>FAHS Associate Dean, Teaching and Undergraduate Studies and Associate Professor of Sport Management Kirsty Spence said Talaga is an \u201cextremely compelling storyteller and investigative researcher.\u201d She is looking forward to welcoming the author to campus to engage with the Brock community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer book is the thorough and solid textbook about the history of Canada that we didn&#8217;t get in school \u2014 and should have,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Knowing<\/em> was named as CBC&#8217;s Nonfiction Book of the Year and a <em>Globe and Mail<\/em> Top 100 Book, among other accolades. It was also adapted into a <a href=\"https:\/\/gem.cbc.ca\/the-knowing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">four-part miniseries on CBC Gem<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Biancaniello is also encouraged by the opportunity that students will have to learn from and connect with the author.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer story isn&#8217;t all that different from that of our own students, most of which are on their own journey of finding out who they and who their ancestors are,\u201d Biancaniello said.<\/p>\n<p>Students interested in attending the free on-campus event, which begins at 10 a.m., are encouraged to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.ca\/e\/a-student-gathering-with-tanya-talaga-tickets-1230550502679?aff=oddtdtcreator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">register in advance on Eventbrite<\/a>.
