{"id":99691,"date":"2025-03-03T13:45:05","date_gmt":"2025-03-03T18:45:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=99691"},"modified":"2025-03-03T17:15:59","modified_gmt":"2025-03-03T22:15:59","slug":"environmental-issues-at-heart-of-spring-summer-courses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/03\/environmental-issues-at-heart-of-spring-summer-courses\/","title":{"rendered":"Environmental issues at heart of Spring\/Summer courses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With registration for <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/02\/7-benefits-of-taking-a-spring-summer-course\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spring\/Summer courses<\/a> opening later this week, Brock students are invited to consider the many opportunities available for studying the environment, sustainability and the human impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere isn\u2019t a student at Brock who couldn\u2019t benefit from building their understanding of the pressing environmental issues facing our society today,\u201d says Lynn Dempsey, Associate Dean, Undergraduate Studies in the Faculty of Social Sciences. \u201cThe United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which are being discussed <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/organization\/sdgsweek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">across Canada this month<\/a>, remind us that there are many avenues into this topic, and all of them are important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two first-year Spring classes in the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/social-sciences\/geography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Geography and Tourism Studies<\/a> highlight the need for broad understanding of how human actions affect and are affected by climate change as well as what mitigations and policy changes can support positive change.<\/p>\n<p>In GEOG 1P03 \u2014 Vulnerability, Human Communities and Environment, students explore risk and disasters, while GEOG 1P12 \u2014 Our Changing Environment: Human Impacts will focus on specific environmental problems such as biodiversity loss and the depletion of natural resources.<\/p>\n<p>The Environmental Sustainability Research Centre (ESRC) will offer two second-year undergraduate courses from the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/esrc\/minor-in-sustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Minor in Sustainability<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In Spring, ENSU 2P01 \u2014 Introduction to Environmental Sustainability will tackle key concepts of sustainability. In Summer, ENSU 2P02 \u2014 Environmental Sustainability in Practice will dive into topics such as sustainable agriculture and corporate responsibility.
