{"id":9942,"date":"2011-05-17T09:41:54","date_gmt":"2011-05-17T14:41:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=9942"},"modified":"2011-05-24T18:44:04","modified_gmt":"2011-05-24T23:44:04","slug":"grad-students-share-their-knowledge-at-reception","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2011\/05\/grad-students-share-their-knowledge-at-reception\/","title":{"rendered":"Grad students share their knowledge at reception"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_9943\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9943\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9943 \" title=\"Nicole Neil, Megan Gordon, Vincenzo Coia and David Allison spoke at the recent Graduate Student Awards and Donor Recognition Event at Brock\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/gradevent.jpg\" alt=\"From left: Nicole Neil, Megan Gordon, Vincenzo Coia and David Allison\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9943\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left: Megan Gordon, Nicole Neil, Vincenzo Coia and David Allison<\/p><\/div>\n<p>David Allison (BKin \u201909) hopes to improve the quality of life for people living with spinal cord injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Megan Gordon (BA \u201907) is exploring the preparedness of teacher candidates for diverse classrooms.<\/p>\n<p>Vincenzo Coia is applying a new field of statistics to help better understand natural disasters.<\/p>\n<p>And Nicole Neil is analyzing and evaluating treatment in order to help children with autism learn skills to cope with anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>As featured speakers at the recent Graduate Student Awards and Donor Recognition reception, Allison, Gordon, Coia and Neil put a face to the breadth of research being pursued by Brock\u2019s 1,536 graduate students.<\/p>\n<p>The foursome is among more than 200 graduate students who have received, to date, 2010-11 internal and external awards and scholarships for academic and research excellence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGraduate students are the crowning achievement of the University,\u201d said Murray Knuttila, Brock\u2019s Provost and Vice-President, Academic, to the audience of 120 faculty, staff, students and donors who attended the May 10 event organized by the <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/graduate-studies\" target=\"_blank\">Faculty of Graduate Studies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGraduate students have the capacity to be creative and systematic and to take information and translate it into usable knowledge and wisdom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Knuttila also recognized donors for the contributions they are making to graduate student success at Brock.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today we have people who are sharing their gifts to help others. The ability of our graduate students to create new knowledge and insight wouldn&#8217;t be possible without the generosity of our donors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As part of the Faculty\u2019s recognition of donor-based awards, a special tribute was made in honour of the Michael H. Spironello Memorial Fellowship. The annual award was created in memory of Spironello, a graduate of Brock\u2019s master\u2019s program in Biological Sciences and PhD candidate at the University of Toronto who died five years ago.
