{"id":99136,"date":"2025-02-06T06:32:55","date_gmt":"2025-02-06T11:32:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=99136"},"modified":"2025-02-12T11:56:53","modified_gmt":"2025-02-12T16:56:53","slug":"tips-for-safe-travel-during-winter-weather","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/02\/tips-for-safe-travel-during-winter-weather\/","title":{"rendered":"Tips for safe travel during winter weather"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With winter in full swing, the Brock community is reminded to be cautious on campus and while travelling in slippery conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Students, staff and faculty can help prevent weather-related slips, trips and falls by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Checking the weather forecast before travelling and allowing extra time to travel if snowy or icy conditions are expected.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Checking the Brock Safety app<\/a>\u00a0and<em>\u00a0The Brock News<\/em>\u00a0for notifications of campus closures due to inclement weather.<\/li>\n<li>Wearing footwear designed for slippery weather conditions, such as boots and shoes with deep treads and low heels.<\/li>\n<li>Clearing snow and ice from car windows, lights and licence plates before driving.<\/li>\n<li>Parking in lots, or areas of lots, that have already been cleared of snow or ice and trying to park within parking space lines.<\/li>\n<li>Taking extra care when entering or exiting vehicles as ice can build up between parked vehicles.<\/li>\n<li>Paying attention to their surroundings and walking slowly on icy or snowy surfaces.<\/li>\n<li>Staying on cleared pathways and avoiding non-pedestrian areas, such as snowbanks or unofficial paths, and following illuminated travel routes before sunrise and after sunset.<\/li>\n<li>Keeping feet planted shoulder-width apart to increase stability.<\/li>\n<li>Brushing off debris from pant legs and footwear and shaking off water from umbrellas and jackets before entering a building.<\/li>\n<li>Not carrying large objects that reduce visibility and limit the ability to land safely during a fall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Slippery or unsafe conditions on outdoor pedestrian surfaces can be reported between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday by calling the Facilities Management Customer Service One Call Hotline at 905-688-5550 x3717 or by emailing\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:FM@brocku.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FM@brocku.ca<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Urgent slip and trip circumstances can be reported to Campus Safety Services at 905-688-5550 x3200 outside of these hours or when the University is closed.<\/p>\n<p>A report should be made to a person of authority, such as an area supervisor or Brock employee, if an incident, injury, near miss or health and safety hazard is observed. \u00a0Circumstances should be reported through an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/human-resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/Brock-Incident-Injury-Report-Form-01-25-18.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">injury\/incident report<\/a>.
