{"id":98836,"date":"2025-01-27T15:56:22","date_gmt":"2025-01-27T20:56:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=98836"},"modified":"2025-01-27T17:30:09","modified_gmt":"2025-01-27T22:30:09","slug":"brock-appoints-next-dean-of-applied-health-sciences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/01\/brock-appoints-next-dean-of-applied-health-sciences\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock appoints next Dean of Applied Health Sciences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Faculty of Applied Health Sciences (FAHS) will have a new leader at its helm this summer.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Panagiota (Nota) Klentrou has been appointed as the next Dean of the Faculty, effective July 1.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">An experienced post-secondary administrator, Klentrou has served three terms as the Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Studies in FAHS from 2011 to 2020.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She is currently in her fourth term as Chair of the Department of Kinesiology, previously holding the position from 2006 to 2011 and 2021 to 2024.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Klentrou has also provided significant collegial leadership and service to the University, serving as an elected member of Senate from 2005 to 2020 and again from 2022 to 2025. During her time as Senator, she has chaired several committees, including those focused on research and scholarship policy; graduate studies; information technology and infrastructure; and planning, priorities and budget advisory. Most recently, she was elected to serve as Chair of Senate.\u202f\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cDr. Klentrou brings a wealth of experience to the table that will benefit all within the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences,\u201d says Arja Vainio-Mattila, Brock\u2019s Provost and Vice-President, Academic. \u201cHer leadership will be an asset to the Faculty as we work together across the University to achieve our strategic goals and reimagine the future through curiosity, creativity and courage.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI also want to express the University\u2019s sincere appreciation to Dr. Peter Tiidus for his outstanding contributions to the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, which he has led since 2015.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Klentrou says she is honoured to soon serve the Faculty as Dean.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cBrock\u2019s Faculty of Applied Health Sciences has built a reputation for its dynamic programming, experiential learning opportunities and impactful research making a difference in Canada and around the world,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m thrilled to be able to work with so many inspiring students, dedicated staff and world-class educators and researchers in this new capacity.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In addition to her extensive service and administrative experience, Klentrou has a strong research background that focuses on exercise physiology and the health implications of sport training in children and youth. Her scholarship investigates the mechanisms<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that explain how exercise and diet affect bone development and lifelong bone health.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Her research has been supported by grants from NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR, and several external agencies, such as Genome Canada, the Canadian Space Agency and the Dairy Farmers of Canada.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In recognition of her work, Klentrou was elected President of the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) in 2018 and became a CSEP Fellow in 2020. In 2023, CSEP recognized her exceptional contributions to exercise physiology in Canada by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/10\/brock-faculty-honoured-for-work-in-exercise-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">awarding her the prestigious CSEP Honour Award<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u202f\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Klentrou holds an MSc and PhD in Exercise Physiology from the Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al, as well as a degree in Physical Education and Sports Science (BSc) from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
