{"id":98561,"date":"2025-01-16T14:46:10","date_gmt":"2025-01-16T19:46:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=98561"},"modified":"2025-01-16T18:22:10","modified_gmt":"2025-01-16T23:22:10","slug":"community-open-house-to-celebrate-brocks-historic-theal-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2025\/01\/community-open-house-to-celebrate-brocks-historic-theal-house\/","title":{"rendered":"Community open house to celebrate Brock\u2019s historic Theal House"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The oldest building on Brock University\u2019s main campus is opening its doors to the community next week to highlight its rich past and celebrate its future.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/60\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">60th anniversary celebrations<\/a>, the Environmental Sustainability Research Centre (ESRC) is inviting students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members to pay a visit to Theal House.<\/p>\n<p>Located between the Community Garden and the Zone 3 parking lot, the building has been home to several Brock departments since the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>While many have wondered at its quaint appearance over the years, few will have been inside, especially since the ESRC moved in and completed an <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/03\/brock-unveils-new-environmental-sustainability-research-centre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">environmentally sustainable renovation<\/a> in keeping with the principles of their research and teaching.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_98562\" style=\"width: 462px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Julia-Baird-Erin-Isaac-scaled.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-98562\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-98562\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Julia-Baird-Erin-Isaac-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"Two women sit indoors together.\" width=\"452\" height=\"279\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-98562\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Environmental Sustainability Research Centre Director Julia Baird (left) and Co-ordinator Erin Isaac (MS \u201924) inside Theal House.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>ESRC Director Julia Baird says the Centre is eager to welcome visitors from Theal House\u2019s past, present and future to the open house to share their stories \u2014 whether they practised musical instruments with the St. Catharines Symphony, dropped beats for CFBU 103.7 or stopped in to pay off a parking ticket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur research centre does a great deal of community-engaged work, and with Brock\u2019s 60th anniversary this year, we saw the perfect opportunity to engage with the community by asking them to come in and see what Theal House looks like today,\u201d says Baird. \u201cWe also want to hear their stories; we all benefit from understanding how the community is connected to this place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Guests from Niagara Parks, the Town of Lincoln and the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority will be in attendance, as well as local historians, senior leaders from Brock and ESRC graduate students. But she hopes that many surprise visitors will help shed a light on how Theal House has been a unique and integral part of Brock\u2019s campus for the past six decades.<\/p>\n<p>Theal House will be open from <strong>10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22<\/strong>.
