{"id":97782,"date":"2024-12-02T14:50:58","date_gmt":"2024-12-02T19:50:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=97782"},"modified":"2024-12-06T16:18:21","modified_gmt":"2024-12-06T21:18:21","slug":"colloquium-to-highlight-latest-social-sciences-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/12\/colloquium-to-highlight-latest-social-sciences-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Colloquium to highlight latest Social Sciences research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>This event is part of 60 Research Talks at Brock, celebrating 60 years of impactful research at Brock University.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Various pressures related to parenting, bullying, perfectionism, working in high stress environments and grappling with environmental sustainability will be explored at the upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/social-sciences\/research\/research-colloquium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social Sciences Research Colloquium<\/a>, where award-winning researchers from across the Faculty of Social Sciences (FOSS) will share findings in an accessible forum.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>2023 FOSS Distinguished Researcher Danielle Sirianni Molnar (BA \u201901, MA \u201905, PhD \u201911) and 2023 FOSS Early Career Researcher Ann Farrell <span data-teams=\"true\">(MA \u201914, PhD \u201918) <\/span>will present alongside master\u2019s and PhD recipients of the FOSS Student Research award.<\/p>\n<p>Farrell, who works closely with students in her <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/farrell-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Empowering Youth Research Lab<\/a> and with fellow members of <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brave\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brock Research on Aggression and Victimization Experiences (BRAVE)<\/a>, says her research centres on \u201cunderstanding the complexities of youth bullying, aggression and mental health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that some young people are involved in bullying, whereas others are not, and that bullying occurs in certain social or environmental contexts but not in others,\u201d says Farrell. \u201cDuring the colloquium, I will share my research on understanding the individual, social and environmental contexts that contribute to bullying experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Molnar, a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Adjustment and Well-Being in Children and Youth and Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/dphwb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Developmental Processes in Health and Well-Being Lab<\/a>, will present on the complexities of perfectionism among young people by looking at the perspectives of parents, teachers and teens themselves, whom she says are often invisible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerfectionism is an issue that affects 25 to 30 per cent of kids, and it&#8217;s on the rise, but they are often ignored because they look like have it together while they\u2019re actually falling apart inside,\u201d says Molnar. \u201cI\u2019m thrilled to take part in this colloquium \u2014 not only do I get to hear about other people\u2019s research, but I get to share what we\u2019re doing, and if we can help one more kid out there, let\u2019s do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The virtual event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, includes the following presentations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cParental Experience Uniquely Affects Cognition and Anxiety-Like Behaviour in Both Sexes of a Biparental Species\u201d \u2013 Anton Dinh, master\u2019s in Psychology candidate<\/li>\n<li>\u201cExploring the Effect of 1:1 Acceptance and Commitment Training Sessions on Staff Engagement in Committed Actions using Ecological Momentary Assessment\u201d \u2013 Kristin Grant, master\u2019s in Applied Disability Studies candidate<\/li>\n<li>\u201cSocial-Ecological Empathy and its Relevance for Sustainability Science\u201d \u2013 Hannah Marlen L\u00fcbker, PhD in Sustainability Science candidate<\/li>\n<li>\u201cUnderstanding Adolescent Bullying\u201d \u2013 Ann Farrell, Assistant Professor of Child and Youth Studies<\/li>\n<li>\u201cInside the Pressure Cooker: An In-Depth Look at Teen Perfectionism\u201d \u2013 Danielle Sirianni Molnar, Associate Professor of Child and Youth Studies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both Farrell and Molnar say that collaboration is essential to their research.
