{"id":97776,"date":"2024-12-02T16:37:25","date_gmt":"2024-12-02T21:37:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=97776"},"modified":"2024-12-02T16:52:44","modified_gmt":"2024-12-02T21:52:44","slug":"giving-tuesday-how-a-bursary-is-lifting-burdens-inspiring-dreams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/12\/giving-tuesday-how-a-bursary-is-lifting-burdens-inspiring-dreams\/","title":{"rendered":"Giving Tuesday: How a bursary is lifting burdens, inspiring dreams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every day, people have the power to transform the lives of Brock University students for generations to come.<\/p>\n<p>This belief inspired Peter Fuller to establish the Anna-Marie Doede Bursary Fund in honour of his wife, Anna-Marie Doede (BEd \u201977), who passed away in 2023 from cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnna-Marie felt that attending Brock University was an important part of her life. It provided her with the tools and abilities to positively influence so many students\u2019 lives,\u201d said Fuller.<\/p>\n<p>One of those students is Autumn Fogal, a fourth-year Concurrent Teacher Education student from Hamilton, Ont.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_97780\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-97780\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-97780\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/A_2-5x7-copy-1050x750.jpg\" alt=\"A young woman poses for a photo in front of a tree. \" width=\"350\" height=\"250\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-97780\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anna-Marie Doede (BEd \u201977) at Convocation in 1977<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Fogal has also been deeply affected by cancer. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022 and was unable work, casting doubt on Fogal\u2019s ability to afford tuition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA weight has been lifted off my shoulders,\u201d Fogal said of receiving the bursary. \u201cIt\u2019s donors like Peter Fuller who help students like me pursue their dreams and aspirations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The financial support has alleviated her tuition concerns, allowing her to continue her studies at Brock while leading Brock\u2019s Relay for Life club, which is associated with the Canadian Cancer Society.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Dec. 3, faculty, staff, alumni, friends and members of the local Niagara community are asked to donate to Brock University\u2019s Giving Tuesday initiative in support of student success.
