{"id":9762,"date":"2011-05-06T12:56:13","date_gmt":"2011-05-06T17:56:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=9762"},"modified":"2011-05-13T13:18:58","modified_gmt":"2011-05-13T18:18:58","slug":"mac-researcher-to-become-brock%e2%80%99s-new-dean-of-applied-health-sciences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2011\/05\/mac-researcher-to-become-brock%e2%80%99s-new-dean-of-applied-health-sciences\/","title":{"rendered":"Mac researcher to become Brock\u2019s new Dean of Applied Health Sciences"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_9796\" style=\"width: 215px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9796\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9796\" title=\"Neil McCartney\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/neil-mccartney.jpg\" alt=\"Neil McCartney\" width=\"205\" height=\"274\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9796\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Neil McCartney<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Neil McCartney \u2014 a renowned researcher with an international reputation for his work on human aging, cardiac rehabilitation and spinal cord injury \u2014 is Brock&#8217;s new Dean of the <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/applied-health-sciences\" target=\"_blank\">Faculty of Applied Health Sciences<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>McCartney, a professor and former chair of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.science.mcmaster.ca\/kinesiology\/people\/faculty\/290-Neil%20McCartney.html\">McMaster University&#8217;s<\/a> Department of Kinesiology, will assume his new position on Aug. 1. Joanne MacLean, former chair of Sport Management at Brock, has acted as Interim Dean while the University conducted its search for a permanent candidate.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement was made by Murray Knuttila, Brock\u2019s Provost and Vice-President Academic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are extremely pleased to be bringing in a scholar of Dr. McCartney\u2019s credentials and achievements,\u201d Knuttila said. \u201cHis academic and leadership capabilities will strengthen Brock\u2019s senior team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCartney said he is excited about his new role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great honour to be selected as Dean,\u201d he said this week. \u201cI will work hard to fulfill the aspirations of students, staff and faculty members. I very much look forward to becoming a member of the Brock community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Currently the director of McMaster\u2019s Centre for Health Promotion and Rehabilitation, McCartney (BEd &#8217;74, Exeter University, UK; PhD &#8217;83, McMaster University) was a founding member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cacr.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Association of Cardiac Rehabilitation<\/a>. He is also a member of the editorial board of the <em>Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Prevention<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, the provincial government appointed McCartney to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.health.gov.on.ca\/en\/news\/bulletin\/2009\/regulatory_councils_kinesiologists.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Transitional Council<\/a> of the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario, where he was subsequently elected as its vice-president.\u00a0\u00a0The council creates the infrastructure, rules and regulations of this soon-to-be-established health care college.<\/p>\n<p>In 1993, McCartney was a visiting scholar at Stanford University in Palo Alta, Calif.
