{"id":97411,"date":"2024-11-18T12:43:44","date_gmt":"2024-11-18T17:43:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=97411"},"modified":"2024-11-19T06:55:16","modified_gmt":"2024-11-19T11:55:16","slug":"resources-available-for-international-fraud-awareness-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/11\/resources-available-for-international-fraud-awareness-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Resources available for International Fraud Awareness Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock\u2019s Internal Audit Services team is raising awareness about the importance of fraud prevention and providing anti-fraud resources as part of International Fraud Awareness Week, which takes place Sunday, Nov. 17 to Saturday, Nov. 23.<\/p>\n<p>The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), the world\u2019s largest anti-fraud organization, reports\u00a0that <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.acfe.com\/report-to-the-nations\/2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fraud costs organizations $5 trillion worldwide each year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInternational Fraud Awareness Week is an opportunity to reflect on how we can help protect not only Brock but also ourselves from fraud,\u201d says Lizette Norio, Associate Director, Internal Audit.<\/p>\n<p>Brock community members can find a variety of educational slide decks, infographics, videos, reports and games on <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/internal-audit\/fraud-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Internal Audit Services\u00a0Fraud Week web\u00a0page<\/a>. The resources cover a range of topics, including defining fraud,\u00a0examples of fraud schemes, why people commit fraud, confessions of convicted fraudsters, identity theft, and the behavioural red flags of fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Norio says that with more than <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.acfe.com\/report-to-the-nations\/2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">80 per cent of fraudsters<\/a> displaying at least one behavioural red flag, these markers could be \u201ckey to preventing or reducing the impact of fraud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust knowing these behavioural red flags can be a clue in detecting fraudulent activity, so it&#8217;s important not to ignore them,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>The eight most common behavioural red flags include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>living beyond one\u2019s means<\/li>\n<li>financial difficulties.<\/li>\n<li>unusually close association with a vendor or customer<\/li>\n<li>unwillingness to share duties.<\/li>\n<li>irritability, suspiciousness or defensiveness<\/li>\n<li>bullying or intimidation<\/li>\n<li>divorce or family problems<\/li>\n<li>having a \u201cwheeler-dealer\u201d attitude<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Anyone who suspects inappropriate or fraudulent activity at Brock is encouraged to disclose it in accordance with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/policies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/94\/Safe-Disclosure-Policy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Safe Disclosure Policy<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/policies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/94\/Safe-Disclosure-Procedures.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Procedures<\/a>, which apply to all University employees, students, volunteers, contractors and suppliers. The Safe Disclosure Policy makes a priority of protecting from reprisal anyone who makes a good faith disclosure.<\/p>\n<p>When possible, disclosures should be made directly to the unit responsible for the area of concern. Additional disclosure avenues include Brock University\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/legal\/contact-us\/\">Legal Counsel<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/campus-safety\/contact-us\/\">Campus Safety Services<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/human-rights\/contact-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Human Rights and Equity<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/human-resources\/contact-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Office of People and Culture<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/internal-audit\/contact-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Internal Audit Services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone uncomfortable disclosing directly can use an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantthorntoncare.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anonymous website<\/a> or call a 24-7 toll-free hotline by dialing 1-855-484-CARE (2273).
