{"id":97356,"date":"2024-11-15T14:24:51","date_gmt":"2024-11-15T19:24:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=97356"},"modified":"2024-11-28T09:28:10","modified_gmt":"2024-11-28T14:28:10","slug":"event-to-explore-implications-of-trumps-white-house-return","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/11\/event-to-explore-implications-of-trumps-white-house-return\/","title":{"rendered":"Event to explore implications of Trump\u2019s White House return"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The recent re-election of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency has raised a number of questions in all corners of the world, but what does it mean for Canadians?<\/p>\n<p>A panel of experts from Brock\u2019s Department of Political Science, with a special guest from Queen\u2019s University, will share their perspectives at a public panel discussion next week.<\/p>\n<p>Associate Professor Blayne Haggart, who co-organized the event, says that while political scientists cannot predict the future, their close study of political systems, trends and behaviours help them \u201csee around corners\u201d in times that are, in his view, literally unprecedented.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolitical scientists spend their lives studying these issues, and we\u2019ve seen since the election that those who study politics and policy have a very bleak view of what\u2019s going on when compared to government officials or regular pundits,\u201d Haggart says.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Professor Danielle McNabb, who organizes <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/social-sciences\/political-science\/speaker-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the department\u2019s Speaker Series<\/a>, says the goal of this event and the series overall is to create opportunities for the Brock community to learn from experts about \u201ctopical and relevant political issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think a lot of people have questions and worries about what the election might mean for Canadians, Americans and, more broadly, for global politics, so the Department of Political Science wants to provide some answers,\u201d she says. \u201cParticularly in an era of misinformation and disinformation and lots of confusion about what\u2019s true and what\u2019s not true, our hope is that the panel can help others make sense of what\u2019s to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speakers will include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Associate Professor Blayne Haggart: &#8220;Canada-U.S. relations and the climate emergency&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Associate Professor Stefan Dolgert: &#8220;How Trump will use the &#8216;authoritarian playbook&#8217; to make the U.S. less democratic and ensure that Republicans remain in power for the foreseeable future&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Assistant Professor Liam Midzain-Gobin: &#8220;The \u2018grievance-ification\u2019 of politics&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Skelton-Clark Postdoctoral Fellow Caroline Dunton (Queen\u2019s University): &#8220;The United Nations, multilateralism and Trump\u2019s potential impact&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>No registration is required, and all are welcome to attend the event, which Haggart hopes will help illuminate some of the complexities of how politics south of the border can impact those at Brock and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople aren\u2019t used to \u2018unprecedented-ness\u2019 \u2014 people live their lives expecting things are going to keep going as they went yesterday and that they\u2019ll keep going like that tomorrow,\u201d says Haggart. \u201cTruly seismic changes do not happen that often.
