{"id":97148,"date":"2024-11-08T11:01:49","date_gmt":"2024-11-08T16:01:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=97148"},"modified":"2024-11-11T10:05:53","modified_gmt":"2024-11-11T15:05:53","slug":"events-to-encourage-conversations-on-food-security","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/11\/events-to-encourage-conversations-on-food-security\/","title":{"rendered":"Events to encourage conversations on food security"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Food security will be at the centre of a weeklong initiative filled with activities and opportunities to spark discussions on the topic.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the Food First program, the Brock University Students\u2019 Union (BUSU) will launch Food Security Week on Monday, Nov. 11, featuring free food events for Brock students, a food drive, and fun, informative games to raise awareness of food security for post-secondary students.<\/p>\n<p>Running until Thursday, Nov. 14, the week will include a free taco bar, The Grocery Game, Money Saver Bingo with Instagram influencer @livingonaloonie, and free mac and cheese.<\/p>\n<p>BUSU, along with the Brock Graduate Students&#8217; Association (GSA), will also host their regular Food First initiatives, such as the Grab and Go and Free Hot Breakfast events in November. Hot breakfast is a free, monthly event that provides a morning meal to fuel students for their day on campus. Free Grab and Go takes place weekly with quick, nutritious snacks for students to pick up on the way to class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Food First program aims to ensure students can focus on their studies without the added worry of where their next meal is coming from,\u201d said Carleigh Charlton, Vice-President, University Affairs. \u201cFood First events provide free meals directly to students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BUSU along with the GSA and Brock International teamed up last June to provide students with free food options on campus with the Food First Pop-up Pantry.<\/p>\n<p>Collection of nonperishable food items remains ongoing at the BUSU office in the Student-Alumni Centre for Food First Pop-up Pantry events.
