{"id":96762,"date":"2024-10-24T13:19:15","date_gmt":"2024-10-24T17:19:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=96762"},"modified":"2024-11-04T11:05:01","modified_gmt":"2024-11-04T16:05:01","slug":"halloween-happenings-encourage-safe-celebration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/10\/halloween-happenings-encourage-safe-celebration\/","title":{"rendered":"Halloween happenings encourage safe celebration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From painting pumpkins and watching themed movies, to dressing up in costume and belting out classic Halloween tunes, there\u2019s no shortage of events set to usher in spooky season on Brock\u2019s campus.<\/p>\n<p>The variety of events on offer \u2014 hosted by the University, Brock University Students\u2019 Union and Graduate Students\u2019 Association \u2014 are meant to encourage a fun and safe Halloween for all.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to events happening in the lead-up to Oct. 31, Halloween night will mark the return of the University\u2019s popular\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/273872\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trick or Eat event<\/a>, which will see students going door to door in local neighbourhoods collecting food donations for Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a nostalgic moment for students. They get to put on their costumes and prepare for trick-or-treating, only the end goal is non-perishable food items rather than candy,\u201d says Jenna Moorhead, Community Experience Co-ordinator with Student Life and Success. \u201cThey have fun visiting with residents and collecting donations for a worthy cause that supports the community they call home throughout the year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several educational campaigns are also taking place this month focusing on appropriate costumes, healthy relationships, and responsible drinking and substance use.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to resources shared through social media and email in the week leading up to Halloween, Brock\u2019s Off-Campus and Neighbourhood Relations team, in partnership with Niagara Regional Police Service and bylaw staff from St. Catharines and Thorold, went door to door in high-density student neighbourhoods on Thursday, Oct. 24 to promote safe and responsible celebrations as part of the Don\u2019t Put the Bad in Badger campaign. The group provided students with materials that encourage appropriate behaviour and educate students about possible fines that can be incurred if municipal bylaws are violated.<\/p>\n<p>The Don\u2019t Put the Bad in Badger campaign will continue with pop-up initiatives on campus in the lead-up to Halloween.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe campaign is a friendly reminder that responsible celebrations \u2014 including those on Halloween and throughout the year \u2014 mean keeping neighbours and communities in consideration,\u201d says Syerra Jasmin, Co-ordinator, Off-Campus Living.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s Halloween events include:<\/p>\n<p>Friday, Oct. 25<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/271832\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spooky Shapes Game Jam<\/a> from 5 to 10 p.m. in TH 269.
