{"id":96735,"date":"2024-10-22T14:34:26","date_gmt":"2024-10-22T18:34:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=96735"},"modified":"2024-10-22T16:36:29","modified_gmt":"2024-10-22T20:36:29","slug":"talks-to-highlight-science-behind-2024-nobel-prizes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/10\/talks-to-highlight-science-behind-2024-nobel-prizes\/","title":{"rendered":"Talks to highlight science behind 2024 Nobel Prizes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the Brock community are invited to a lunchtime event discussing recent Nobel Prizes in chemistry, physics and physiology or medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Organized by the Faculty of Mathematics and Science, the <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/274841\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nobel Prize 2024 \u2014 Learn at Lunch<\/a> will feature three 15-minute talks from Brock researchers who will break down the complex scientific concepts behind the groundbreaking research and highlight potential applications that could revolutionize the future.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Associate Professor of Biological Sciences Aleksandar (Sasha) Necakov will speak about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/medicine\/2024\/press-release\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine<\/a>, awarded jointly to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for the discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation.<\/li>\n<li>Associate Professor of Computer Science and Biological Sciences Yifeng Li will speak about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/physics\/2024\/press-release\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024 Nobel Prize in Physics<\/a>, awarded jointly to John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks.<\/li>\n<li>Professor of Chemistry Travis Dudding will speak about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/chemistry\/2024\/press-release\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry<\/a>, which was divided with one half awarded to David Baker for computational protein design and the other half jointly awarded to Demis Hassabis and John Jumper for protein structure prediction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Nobel Prize Learn at Lunch event will take place Tuesday, Oct. 29 from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. at the Brock-Niagara Validation, Prototyping and Manufacturing Institute in Inniskillin Hall room 222 (IH 222).<\/p>\n<p>All Brock faculty, students and staff are invited to attend. A background in science is not required.
