A team of Brock community members has hit some major milestones while fundraising for local cancer care.<\/p>\n

The Brock University Cyclones team participated in the annual Big Move Cancer Ride<\/a> in support of Niagara\u2019s Walker Family Cancer Center on Sept. 8.<\/p>\n

Senior Platoon Supervisor Karl Thorp, captain of the Brock team, says he rides for the friends and family he has lost to cancer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel it is important for cancer patients to receive their treatment and care close to their home and the people who provide them with strength and support,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

The team of 23 cyclists, which included the largest number of faculty and staff riders in the Cyclone\u2019s history, ranked second out of 58 teams this year by raising $34,985.<\/p>\n

Longtime Brock University Cyclones member John Suk (BS ’73), former Chair of the Brock University Board of Trustees, was 2024\u2019s top individual fundraiser, raising $11,752. Suk and fellow former Brock University Board Chair Gary Comerford also donated funds for new team jerseys this year.<\/p>\n

Suk has raised more than $100,000 over the past 17 years. He is among several Brock team members who have been inducted into the Platinum Peddlers Club for raising $10,000.<\/p>\n

The Brock University Cyclones were also inducted into the Platinum Peddlers Club as a team in 2016 for raising more than $50,000 since their inaugural ride. In total, the team has raised $264,132 in support of the Walker Family Cancer Centre since their inaugural ride in 2013.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
