Carleigh Charlton\u2019s work to advance Brock University\u2019s open educational practices has been recognized with a global award.<\/p>\n

The fifth-year Political Science student and Vice-President of University Affairs with the Brock University Students\u2019 Union (BUSU) received the\u00a02024 Open Education Award for Excellence<\/a> in the People In Open: Student Category<\/a>. The award was announced at a virtual celebration on Wednesday, Sept. 18.<\/p>\n

In its official announcement<\/a>, the awarding body, Open Education Global, said \u201cCarleigh\u2019s leadership and advocacy for open education as a student-powered effort is a model for how open education can be advanced within a large institution.\u201d<\/p>\n

A founding member of Brock\u2019s Open Education Working Group, Charlton supported the launch of Brock\u2019s\u00a0Open Educational Resources\u00a0(OER) Grant program<\/a>, which is now a model for other post-secondary institutions across Ontario.<\/p>\n

Charlton said it was an \u201chonour to even be nominated\u201d \u2014 let alone win \u2014 the award and that she is grateful to see the OER program receive global recognition.<\/p>\n

She attributes the advancements she has made to open education at Brock to a strong, collaborative effort with her BUSU colleagues and predecessor Andrea Lepage as well as Vice-Provost, Teaching and Learning Rajiv Jhangiani and the broader Open Education Working group.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is only the beginning for the OER Grant program, and I’m so excited to see the projects that will come out of it and the students\u2019 savings that will continue to grow for years to come,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
