{"id":95637,"date":"2024-09-16T16:19:34","date_gmt":"2024-09-16T20:19:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=95637"},"modified":"2024-09-16T17:04:05","modified_gmt":"2024-09-16T21:04:05","slug":"community-event-to-mark-25-years-of-steel-blade-60-years-of-brock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/09\/community-event-to-mark-25-years-of-steel-blade-60-years-of-brock\/","title":{"rendered":"Community event to mark 25 years of Steel Blade, 60 years of Brock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When the puck drops at the Meridian Centre on Friday, Sept. 20, it will do more than signal the start of a hometown hockey game.<\/p>\n<p>The symbolic moment will mark 25 years since the inception of the Steel Blade Classic \u2014 a cornerstone of Brock\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/homecoming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Homecoming celebrations<\/a> \u2014 while also reflecting on the University\u2019s 60th anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>The Brock Badgers men\u2019s hockey team will usher in the electric atmosphere the event is known for when they face off against the Guelph Gryphons at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Since its inception in 1999, the Steel Blade Classic has drawn thousands of fans annually, becoming a cherished tradition that reflects both Brock\u2019s sporting excellence and its deep ties to the Niagara region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Steel Blade Classic goes beyond hockey. It\u2019s a celebration of community, pride and tradition,\u201d said Melissa Krist, Executive Director, Brock Sports and Recreation. \u201cEvery year, this event brings out the heart of our University \u2014 and of Niagara \u2014 and showcases the fierce but friendly rivalry with Guelph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a fun twist, Krist has issued a friendly wager to University of Guelph Athletic Director and Brock alumnus Scott McRoberts (BSM \u201902). The losing team\u2019s Athletic Director will wear the winner\u2019s T-shirt, adding a playful edge to the highly anticipated showdown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stakes are always high on the ice and with the added excitement of the T-shirt wager, it\u2019s not just about winning, it\u2019s about making lasting memories for both teams and fans alike,\u201d Krist said. \u201cWe can\u2019t wait to hear the roar of the crowd as this milestone game gets underway and we celebrate 60 years of Brock in the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Steel Blade Classic isn\u2019t just about the action on the ice. Pre-game festivities, including Brock\u2019s Fan Fest, will take place from 5 to 6:45 p.m. outside the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts.<\/p>\n<p>Fans can enjoy live music, local food trucks and family-friendly activities before heading into the arena.<\/p>\n<p>The opening puck drop ceremony will feature Brock University President and Vice-Chancellor Lesley Rigg alongside former Brock Athletic Director the Honourable Neil Lumsden, who currently serves as Ontario\u2019s Minister of Sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Steel Blade Classic is a rich tradition that provides an opportunity for some of our top student-athletes to showcase their skills on the ice,\u201d said Lumsden. \u201cEvents like this bring communities together in the spirit of competition and provide a welcome boost to the local economy as thousands of fans come to cheer on their team.
